THE STATE FUNERAL OF SIR WINSTON LEONARD SPENCER CHURCHILL

CHURCHILL IN OLD AGE (HE BEGAN PLANNING HIS OWN FUNERAL WHICH HE DUBBED “OPERATION HOPE NOT” CHURCHILL LOVED RITUALS AND CEREMONIES. HE KNEW THEIR POWER AND THEIR INFLUENCE. HE BEGAN PLANNING HIS OWN FUNERAL IN DECEMBER 1943. ORIGINALLY THE PLAN WAS GIVEN THE TITLE OF “THE FUNERAL BOOK,” AND IN THIS BOOK CHURCHILL WROTE OUT THE MINUTEST DETAILS CONCERNING THE CEREMONY AND WAS NOT ABOVE REMOVING PEOPLE FROM THE PROCEEDINGS WHO HAD PROVOCKED HIM. BY 1954 HE WAS AT WORK AGAIN, BUT BY THIS TIME THE QUEEN HAD APPROAVED A STATE FUNERAL. CHURCHILL ALSO CONCEIVED OF A TRIP UP THE THAMES LIKE LORD NELSON HAD IN 1806 – AND AS CHURCHILL LOVED THE NAVY AND WAS AT ONE TIME HEAD OF THE ADMIRALTY THE WAS DEEMED MOST APPROPRIATE.

CHURCHILL’S LAST YEARS WERE NOT HIS BEST. HIS MIND WANDERED, HE WAS FEEBLE, AND AT TIME SAT FOR HOURS IN COMPLETE SILENCE. THIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS TAKEN ON NOVEMBER 30, 1964 ON HIS 90TH BIRTHDAY

THIS IS THE HOME WHERE CHURCHILL DIED IN NEW HYDE PARK GATE, LONDON EARLY IN JANUARY 1964 CHURCHILL SUFFERED A MASSIVE STROKE. HE LAST WORDS WERE “I AM SO BORED WITH IT.” SHORTLY BEFORE 8:00 A.M. CHURCHILL DIED. HE DIED ON THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS OWN FATHERS DEATH. BIG BEN TOLLED THE 8:00 A.M. HOUR AND THEN WAS SILENT AND THE LIGHTS IN PICCADILLY CIRCUS WERE EXTINGUISHED.

THE BANTINGS THE ROYAL UNDERTAKERS FROM 1810-1928 SIR FREDERICK BANTING WILLIAM WESTPORT BANTING THE BANTING FAMILY HELD WHAT IS CALLED THE ROYAL WARRANT FROM 1810-1928. IN EFFECT THE ROYAL WARRANTS WHICH ARE A DISTINCTIVELY EUROPEAN CUSTOMS MEANS THAT ROYAL FAMILIES ISSUE WARRANTS TO CERTAIN TRADES AS THE BUTCHER, COBBLER, TAILOR. THE BANTING FAMILY HELD THE ROYAL WARRANT TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE AS THE ROYAL UNDERTAKERS FOR DECADES. THE LEFT IMAGE IS WILLIAM BANTING WHO INTERESTINGLY WENT DOWN IN HISTORY NOT AS THE ROYAL UNDERTAKER BUT AS THE ORIGINATOR OF THE LOW CARB DIET. MR. BANTING STOOD 5’4” AND WEIGHTED OVER 400 LBS. HE DEVELOPED THE IDEA OF EATING ONLY A PROTEIN DIET AND LOST 150 LBS. HIS DIET BECAME A FAD IN EUROPE AND TO THIS DAY IN SWEDEN THE TERM TO DIET IS “TO BANT.” THE RIGHT IMAGE IS HIS GRANDSON FREDERICK GRAHAM BANTING WHO WON THE NOBEL PRIZE IN MEDICINE FOR THE DISCOVERY OF INSULIN.
