SOCIAL LEARNING analytics What social learning analytics are. Why they are becoming more important. What are the benefits they may offer.

DEFINITION “Social Learning Analytics (SLA) can be usefully thought of as a subset of learning analytics, which draws on the substantial body of work evidencing that new skills and ideas are not solely individual achievements, but are developed, carried forward, and passed on through interaction and collaboration.” (Ferguson & Buckingham, 2012, p.23)

What social learning analytics are Social learning analytics make use of data generated by learners’ online activity in order to identify and monitor behaviours and patterns within the learning environment that signify effective process. (Ferguson & Buckingham, 2012)

What social learning analytics are cont’d The intention is to make these visible to learners, to learning groups and to teachers, together with recommendations that spark and support learning. (Ferguson & Buckingham, 2012)

Why they are becoming more important As online social learning becomes more prevalent there is a pressing need for effective innovation in organizational life. SLA provides new means of monitoring learner progress. In order to do this, these analytics make use of data generated when learners are socially engaged. (Ferguson & Buckingham, 2012)

What are the benefits they may offer Typically, success is formally defined as engaging in some form of summative assessment. Social Learning Analytics seek to enrich this conception by making visible, and in some cases potentially actionable, behaviours and patterns in the learning environment that signify effective process.

5 categories of Analytics social network analytics — interpersonal relationships define social platforms • discourse analytics —language is a primary tool for knowledge negotiation and construction • content analytics — user-generated content is one of the defining characteristics of Web 2.0 • disposition analytics — intrinsic motivation to learn is a defining feature of online social media, and lies at the heart of engaged learning, and innovation • context analytics — mobile computing is transforming access to both people and content.
