Subject Selections for Yr11/12 Further Information

Must be getting A/B for pre-Senior General English Pathways Yr11 & 12 Achieving C for pre-Senior General English or completing pre-Senior Essential English Must be getting A/B for pre-Senior General English General Subjects = ATAR Pathway Applied Subjects = Vocational Pathway

Key Points – English and Maths: Students will not be permitted to study other General Subjects without studying General English Some subjects will also require students to study Math Methods – eg. Physics & Chemistry Participation in General English must have English Teacher and HOD English support Participation in General Maths or Math Methods must have Maths Teacher and HOD Maths support

Key Points - TAFE: All students must choose 6 subjects – do not choose Study unless you already have a School-based Traineeship Students applying to study at TAFE - still choose 6 subjects Once students are approved and accepted into TAFE, timetable adjustments can be made All TAFE applications must be approved by the school Students choosing a General Subject/ATAR course are not guaranteed approval to study a TAFE course

Regarding TAFE studies: Students choosing to study a TAFE course one day per week will miss 4 school lessons that day Students are required to catch up on work missed on that day – it is the student’s responsibility to catch up – not the teacher’s!

Why might TAFE not be approved for students studying General Subjects/ATAR course: Students studying General Subjects will miss 1 lesson out of 3 for that subject Eg. Chemistry has 3 lessons each week. If you miss 1 due to TAFE, you will only have 2 lessons for Chemistry. You have to catch up in your own time everything that was covered for that lesson, whether it was theory or practical It is very difficult to pass a subject when you miss 1/3 of the course material each week ATAR students need to concentrate on and prioritise their General subjects to get the best ATAR they can

Case Study: Tim Meet Tim Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday L1 Welfare General Maths Industrial Skills PE Biology MT L2 General English Chemistry L3 Lunch L4 Sport Meet Tim

Case Study: Tim Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday L1 Welfare General Maths Industrial Skills PE Biology MT L2 General English Chemistry L3 Lunch L4 Sport Tim achieved A’s and B’s in Yr10 and was approved to study a General Subject/ATAR program for Yr11/12 He wants an ATAR to study Psychology at QUT He needs to achieve an ATAR of around 81.00 or better To get this ATAR he needs to achieve A’s and B’s

Case Study: Tim Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday L1 Welfare General Maths Industrial Skills PE Biology MT L2 General English Chemistry L3 Lunch L4 Sport Tim knows that he is better off studying 5 General Subjects to achieve an ATAR as the Uni’s are looking for these skills more He thought he would study Industrial Skills as he also likes this learning area

Case Study: Tim Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday L1 Welfare General Maths Industrial Skills PE Biology MT L2 General English Chemistry L3 Lunch L4 Sport Tim is also thinking about studying a Certificate 2 in Music Industry (Sound Production), 1 day per week.

Case Study: Tim What problems do you foresee with this program? Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday L1 Welfare General Maths Industrial Skills PE Biology MT L2 General English Chemistry L3 Lunch L4 Sport What problems do you foresee with this program? Missing one lesson per week of Biology, PE and English will be a huge amount of work to catch up on Assessments for these subjects will include 2000 word assignments plus exams Tim also has a part-time job, likes to play club sport and likes to socialise with friends

It will be difficult to pass these subjects whilst missing 30% of the learning each week (there are only 3 lessons of each subject per week) Tim has to see his teachers outside of class each week to find out what work will be covered on Friday, and then work on this himself

Tim doesn’t want to give up the Industrial Skills for a Study lesson Due to missing one lesson each week, he will fall behind with practical tasks

What to do with Tim? Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday L1 Welfare General Maths Industrial Skills PE Biology MT L2 General English Chemistry L3 Lunch L4 Sport Tim’s TAFE application was not approved by the school as he was studying an ATAR program He was OK with this as he realised that participating in the TAFE course would give him an impossible work load He is also thinking he might change the Industrial Skills to Accounting as he wants a back up in case he doesn’t do so well in one of his other subjects – might give him a better ATAR (might help him get into Uni)
