WHAT IS SELF ESTEEM? Feeling and thoughts about self Respect/regard of self Self worth/value of self Self image – perception of self Changeable – different times/circumstances Cannot see self-esteem but can see the levels.

WHY IS SELF ESTEEM SO IMPORTANT? Behaviour and social skills Attitude towards learning/school/teachers Has an affect on ability to achieve Affect on relationship development

ACTIVITY IN SMALL GROUPS Identify reasons for low self-esteem Behaviours which indicate high/low states of self- esteem Ways to promote positive self-esteem

Ways to encourage positive self-esteem and self image Treat every pupil as an individual Be positive by using praise and encouragement to help pupils to focus on what they are good at Help pupils to maximise their potential Encourage pupils to measure their achievements by comparing them to their own efforts Have high but realistic expectations of all pupils Encourage positive participation during learning activities Use positive images of children/young people in books, stories etc.
