Ionic Bonding

There is a general rule that states that atoms will arrange themselves in an order that will allow them to have eight electrons in their outer shell - or eight valence electrons. This is called the octet rule

Ionic bonds are formed by one atom transferring electrons to another atom to form ions. They are formed between a metal and a non metal metals form positive ions by losing electrons nonmetals form negative ions by gaining electrons the ionic bond is the attraction between the ions of unlike charge

Using Lewis Diagrams Once you have drawn out the Lewis diagram for elements it is easy to see how they connect to make the octet rule

Ionic formula Another way to figure out what the ionic formula is to know that the net ionic charge must equal zero In other words when you add the charges together they must balance out and equal zero This holds true for binary compounds and polyatomic ions

Naming Binary Ionic Compounds Binary compounds are when a bond is formed between 2 elements. there are two simple rules: 1. Always start the name with the metal first and then the non-metal. 2. The non-metal suffix changes to 'ide'.

Example: Compound Chemical Name 1.KCl potassium chloride 2. Na3P sodium phosphide

Polyatomic Ions To name polyatomic ionic compounds, use the same rules but use the polyatomic sheet to name the molecule. Example:   Compound Chemical Name CaCO3 calcium carbonate NH4NO3 ammonium nitrate
