Warm Up January 5, 2011 Select two words from the word wall that start with the same letter. Now compare the similarities and differences of the two words.

Standards SS7H1: The student will analyze continuity and change in Africa leading to the 21st century. Explain how nationalism led to independence in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Today I will learn how nationalism helped lead to independence for many African nations, because it has affects life in the continent of Africa today.

Africa…What we know so far We know that Africa is a continent NOT a country.

Africa…What we know so far Why not just take the natural resources from Africa? Europeans then partitioned Africa based on their own needs. This caused ethnic conflicts, civil wars, and artificial political boundaries.

Africa…What we know so far World Wars I & II showed Africans: A wider world then they had ever been exposed to before. Many Africans fought for European countries in WW II

Africa…What we know so far World Wars I & II showed Africans: After the war, European countries were financially drained Africans thought…now is the time to break free!

Road to Independence Kenya Kenya gained its independence from Britain in 1964 under the leadership of Joseph Kenyatta. The governemnt of Kenyatta was not open or free In recent years there have been political improvements in Kenya but more improvments are needed.

Road to Independence Nigeria Nigeria gained its impendence from Britain in 1960 through peaceful independence movements. Within months religious wars broke out between the Christian south and the Muslim north Although Nigeria has lots of natural resources, the corrupt government has not allowed the resources to be properly developed.

Road to Independence South Africa In 1961, South Africans voted for and gained their independence form Britain. It took years of protests, several more decades, and a change in government leaders before blacks began to have a role in government.
