Figure 2 Variability of heart rate and blood pressure during the head-up tilt test. The coefficient of variation (CV = standard deviation/mean) was calculated for individuals diagnosed as normal (n = 23), neurally mediated hypotension (n = 6), or postural orthostatic tachycardia (n = 8 recumbent/7 tilted) during the recumbent and tilted portions of the head-up tilt test. Variablility is presented as the mean of individual CVs within each group. Mean CVs that are significantly different from normal (Student’s t test, alpha = 0.05) are present in the tilted neurally mediated hypotension component of the figure. NMH = neurally mediated hypotension; POT = postural orthostatic tachycardia.
