Job Interview Skills and Resources Career Unit Overview Learning Objective: Students will learn about the documents needed to apply for a job.

Applying for a Job Three important documents Resume Cover Letter References Job Application may also be required by the company

Resume A snapshot of your skills and experiences Never use the word “I” Only 1-2 pages long BE HONEST References go at the bottom Check spelling and grammar Need only one resume per field If you are applying to five jobs in architecture, just print the same resume out 5 times If you are applying to a job in architecture and a job in engineering, you need to make a resume for each

Cover Letter Personalized for every position and company to which you apply A more personal way to introduce yourself A way to show interest in the company No more than 1 page long Always ask for an interview at the end Check spelling and grammar Be sure to sign

References ONLY professional references No one related to you Not your best friend Do not list as a reference the manager for a work experience where you made a bad impression May include at the bottom of your resume or on its own page

Job Application May be required by the company Complete in blue or black ink BE HONEST Good idea to keep a list of references and work experiences and all pertinent information (phone number, address, etc.) on you to help fill out the application

Work Ethic What is Work Ethic? Work ethic is reflected in a person’s attitudes, feelings, and beliefs towards work. Work ethic is the morals and values in the work place. Hill (1999) defines work ethic as: Interpersonal skills Initiative Being dependable What do these three items mean?

What is Ethical Behavior? Work Ethic What is Ethical Behavior? Ethic behavior includes: following personal and professional codes of ethics Honesty maintaining good attendance (and explaining any absences) starting work on time and being productive while at work keeping confidential matters to yourself avoiding gossip and disputes following workplace rules and regulations Respecting your co-workers keeping your promises.
