I. Imperialism Expansion to new territories to seek raw materials and new markets Making empires Pres. Washington said to steer clear of alliances Enough home problems Limited military By end of 1800s, economy not so small anymore Need resources and markets

I. Imperialism US had already spread westward Those new areas were settled by Americans Intended to make them regular states Even Alaska, bought in 1862, became a state in 1958 These new territories were never meant to become states Were to be used for raw materials and new markets

II. Reasons to spread Capitalism meant a need for resources and markets Surplus of goods need to be sold somewhere Increase demand for American crops too
