GFS Group Fundraising 2019 Hannah Ormisher – Fundraising Coordinator Available Monday to Wednesday E: Hannah@girlsfriendlysociety.org.uk P: 020 3968 9122 M: 073 8483 5819 Hello, I am Hannah, your GFS Fundraising Coordinator. I am here to support you and your group with fundraising. You can reach me on these contact details if you have any queries regarding fundraising. I only work Monday to Wednesday, so if you email me on a Thursday and you don’t hear back from me straight away it’s not because I am ignoring you Copies of this presentation are available to take away, are on the online portal and I can also email or post a copy to anyone who wants one.
Online Portal Username: Volunteer Password: Volunteer123 Before we get started, I just want to cover a quick administrative point. Throughout the presentation, I may make reference to resources being available on the ‘online portal’. You may already be familiar with the online portal, but if not, you can access it by visiting the GFS website (https://girlsfriendlysociety.org.uk/). When you visit the website in the very bottom right hand corner you will see a link to the portal. After clicking on the portal link, you should select the ‘Volunteer resources’ section. You will then be required to enter the user name and password. If you have any difficulty accessing the portal you can get help from myself or your RDC. I can also send you resources directly via email or post.
Sources of Funds for GFS Groups 1. Girls and young women (subs and contributions) 2. GFS grants and match funding 3. Fundraising There is money from girls, which could be their weekly subs or a contribution to a particular trip or activity. There is money received from head office in the form of a grant or match funding. I am not going to talk about this today, but if you have any questions about accessing grants or match funding please do contact me. The third source of income is fundraising. Moving forward, you will not be able to rely on money from head office to completely support your group. GFS as a whole does have money, but a lot of it is restricted and can only be invested, we can’t spend it. Whilst there is money available for groups, we need to plan and think carefully about how we spend it to ensure the sustainability of groups. Fundraising is a great way to ensure that groups can offer amazing opportunities and activities for girls and young women well into the future.
Fundraising Pack Benefits of fundraising for your group Examples of what you can do with extra money Fundraising support available Different types of fundraising With the help of staff and volunteers, to whom I am very grateful, I have put together a fundraising pack. The pack includes information about the benefits of fundraising with your group, examples of activities and resources you can pay for with the funds you raise, the support you can get with fundraising and a basic overview of different types of fundraising. It does not include step-by-step guides or processes, but you will be provided with more detailed information about specific fundraising activities throughout the year as I create more resources. If you need more guidance or specific information in the meantime, please do get in touch with me. The fundraising pack is available on the online portal and you will be receiving a link in the next volunteer newsletter. I have a couple of samples to look at here and I can email you or post you a copy on request.
Five Easy Fundraising Methods 1. Facebook Fundraisers 2. Local businesses and organisations 3. Sponsored events 4. Give as You Live 5. Community events I have received feedback that the way I can help you most when it comes to fundraising is to provide practical information on quick and easy ways to get started. As such, I have come up with five quick and easy fundraising methods that you can implement with your groups. These are raising money on Facebook, fundraising from organisations in your community, sponsored events, raising money through online shopping and taking part in existing community events.
1. Facebook Fundraisers So let’s start with Facebook. If you use Facebook, you may have seen people raising money for charity for their birthday, or charities themselves raising money on Facebook. Reasonably recently, Facebook launched a function called a ‘fundraiser’. Anyone on Facebook can set up a fundraiser for Girls Friendly Society. If you use Facebook, you could set up a fundraiser to raise money for your birthday, or for a particular trip or piece of equipment for your group. To set up a Fundraiser go to the Girls Friendly Society page on Facebook and click the button that says ‘+Create fundraiser’ underneath the cover image.
1. Facebook Fundraisers On the next page, there will be a box that shows you are raising money for Girls Friendly Society in England and Wales. You will need to enter a fundraising target and also an end date.
1. Facebook Fundraisers Include your group name in the title Change text to be about your group Add a nice picture On the next page you will need to choose a title for your fundraiser. It is important that you put the name of your GFS group in the title. Donors need to understand which group the money will go to, and when we receive the funds we need to be able to identify which group they belong to. A description will automatically appear on this page. You should edit it to be more specific to your group and what you are raising money for. It is also nice if you can add a picture.
1. Facebook Fundraisers 1. Create fundraiser 2. Share on Facebook 3. Copy link to share in emails or other social media 4. Thank donors 5. Request payment Once you have created your fundraiser on Facebook, the next step is to share it far and wide. You can share it on Facebook with friends and in Facebook groups you belong to. On the fundraiser page you will be able to find a link so that you can share it on email, Whats App and other social media. Check your fundraiser page to see who has donated, it is nice to thank them. Once you reach the fundraiser end date, please send me a request for the funds.
1. Facebook Fundraisers Facebook will transfer all funds from fundraisers to head office. Please fill in the Facebook payment request form and we will transfer money to the group bank account. The form isn’t very long, we just need it to make sure that the right amount of money ends up in the right bank accounts, as many different groups might be raising money on Facebook. The form is available on the online portal, or you can request for it to be sent to you. Please note that it can take several months for Facebook to transfer the funds to GFS.
2. Local Businesses and Organisations 1 2 3 5 4 Let Hannah know of five local opportunities There are probably lots of opportunities to reach out for support in your local community. I am here to help with this. If you can think of some local businesses or organisations that might be able to help support your group, let me know and we can work out the best way to approach them. You do not need to approach local businesses and organisations by yourself (unless you want to). I can make phone calls, write letters and emails and complete applications on your behalf. I have got five examples of businesses or organisations that could help a GFS group, but the opportunities will differ in every community. The first example is local supermarkets. You may have seen supermarket schemes where customers can choose a local charity to support. I have started supporting groups with applications to local supermarkets. So far GFS groups have been chosen as a local charity of the month at two Waitrose branches and I am starting to work on nominating groups at Asda superstores. The next example is a yoga studio, which may be able to offer a free class or workshop. Next is a shopping centre where it might be possible to sing Christmas carols and hold a collection. I am looking into ordering collections buckets and tins so you can expect to hear from me about that. The last two examples are a golf club and rotary club, who might consider your GFS group being their charity of the year, or hosting a fundraising event on behalf of your GFS group.
3. Sponsored Events The third fundraising method is sponsored events. You could organise a sponsored event in your group, such as the Skipathon that is taking place this week and next week. Sponsored events can be a great way for girls to get excited about a physical activity or challenge. Sponsored events might not suit every group and it is important to be aware of potential problems with competitiveness between girls and girls being unable to raise sponsorship money. The other option for sponsored events is to take part in an externally arranged event such as the Great North Run or a Tough Mudder. A volunteer from GFS Atherstone took part in a local 10K and raised money for the Atherstone group. You could arrange to take part in an event yourself or I am happy to help you arrange something.
3. Sponsored Events with Your Group 1. Do you need to do a risk assessment? 2. Give out sponsorship forms 3. Keep the money safe and bank as soon as possible 4. Protect personal data 5. Send in sponsorships forms to get 25% extra on eligible donations If you carry out a sponsored event with your group there are some practical points to be aware of. You may need to carry out a risk assessment if the activity is not at your usual venue or is a type of activity that is not something you would usually do in your group. There are sponsorship forms available on the online portal or I can send them to you. Give these out in advance and make sure you collect them back in when you collect the money so that we can claim Gift Aid. Keep the money in a safe and secure location. It should be counted by two people and banked as soon as possible. Sponsorship forms contain personal information and should not be left lying around. To comply with GDPR, they should be kept in a secure place. You can post sponsorship forms to our Freepost address so that we can claim Gift Aid. For every eligible donation of £1 we can claim an extra 25p.
4. Give as You Live https://www.giveasyoulive.com/join/gfsociety-bearwood There is a website called Give as You Live that will help you raise money when you shop online. I am going to show you how you, a friend or a parent can raise money when shopping. Each GFS group has their own Give as You Live link so that funds can be raised for an individual group. I can send you the link for your group. Here we have a link for GFS Bearwood. When you click on the link you are taken to the Give as You Live website. You then need to click on the ‘Support us it’s free button’ and enter your details. Once signed up you can search for an online shop in the search bar at the top right of the page. Once you are on the retailer’s page click ‘Shop and raise’ then continue shopping as normal. Remember to visit the Give as You Live website every time you shop online. The amount of money donated to your group each time you shop will be small, for example, if you spend £10 on the Hobbycraft website, the donation would be 25p. However, if you get lots of volunteers, friends and parents to do this every time they shop online it can add up.
5. Community Events The final fundraising method I am going to talk to you about is taking part in community events. Community events are things like summer carnivals, or a fete or fayre at a local school or church. If you have an opportunity to take part in an event such as this, I highly recommend it as you won’t have to worry about getting people to come to the event as that will be taken care of for you.
Any questions? Those are your five quick and easy fund raising methods. I hope it all makes sense and seems achievable. You do not have to do it all yourself or take it all on at once. Start with something you feel comfortable with and remember that I am here to help.
