MASQUERADE Summer Project Art 2019 Phillip Valdez Objective: Show your understanding of the design process by creating a 3d paper mask. Stretch skills in problem solving: creating 3d forms and working with simple materials to get innovative effects and forms. TASKS Visit the cultural masks at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. Sketch the shapes and forms. Look up other mask forms. Look up paper manipulation artists and paper masks to gather ideas. Design your own fantasy paper mask inspired by an animal/s, character, artwork (inc architecture) or natural forms. Obtain cartridge paper or thin card to work with and some strong glue or double sided tape; sharp small scissors &/or a craft knife. You will need to explore cutting, scoring, pleating and folding papers and creating different effects and textures. Use all white or solid colour papers – do not add paint or other materials. You may wish to start with a mask template, mould or cast (although make this disappear eventually).
