WHAT MAKES A GOOD VISION? Leaders must create visions which their organizations accept and share and which are positive and inspiring yet detailed and focused (Military Review, 1998) Visions consist of core values, core purpose, BHAGs, and vivid description (Collins & Porras, 1996) Vision engages heart and spirit, provides meaning to the work, and is simple (Bennis).

BARRY’S VISION Help poor women and their children become less poor (p. 221) Alleviating poverty, promoting self-sufficiency, and stimulating economic activity (p. 230) Comparable to the abolition of slavery (p. 229) It is really an economic revolution (p. 229) We are trying to change the world (p. 230) Future of the world will come from flexible, responsive small businesses (p. 221-222) Universal credit access for all (500M)(p.228) Reach 100M of poorest by 2005 (p. 230)

COMMUNICATING THE VISION (Bennis) Should express excitement, love for, and commitment to your dream Should be clear and vivid and reach others with the magic you create Should be engaging and inspiring

IN GROUPS Choose an organization you are all familiar with (e.g., Brandeis University, this class, a fraternity or sorority, club, sports team, etc.) Develop a vision for the organization What should go into a speech to communicate the vision?
