Relevant Details & Sensory Language Multi-Genre Memoir Revising Day I 8th Grade ELA Writers Workshop

Rationale Writers include relevant details and sensory language in their memoirs in order to make their writing more interesting and unique while helping readers picture what is written. YOUR TARGET: Incorporate… details to visualize events sensory language experiences

Making Memoir Engaging = Sensory Language Relevant Details about: People Objects Places Experiences Today we will look at how Gavin Curtis is pulling us into the story. Your job: Identify the details and what purpose they serve.

What we notice from Bat Boy Put the “Attention to Details” handout on your desk. Use it to determine: What purpose does each example serve? “Sashay” pg. 1 “Cooped up inside all the time, it’s a wonder that boy doesn’t sprout mushrooms.” pg. 1 “I prefer to call it a violin.” pg. 2 “I play Swan Lake the way I feel – sad and quiet.” 1st game “The sun is high and there is little shade.” (at last game)

Your job: determine which type of details and sensory language you need to revise for today.
