Ground Rules Listen to each other. Respect each other’s opinions. Be honest but do not share any personal stories of your own or of anyone you know. You have the right to pass in discussion. Any more? Safeguarding If you tell us something that may put you or others at risk of harm we may share that information so that we can help and support you. We cannot keep it a secret. Please use the Anonymous Question box if you wish. 11/05/2018 _#knifefree Lesson

Introduction _1 What do you think the characters are talking about? _2 Which character do you agree with? Why? _3 What could Harper say to persuade Ashley? Ashley: “You don’t carry one?” Harper: “What? No way!” Ashley: “How else can you protect yourself?” Harper: “I don’t think it would protect me!” Ashley: “Well, it makes me feel safer…” Harper: “That’s such a mistake!” _#knifefree Lesson

_1 Do you think they are true? _2 Might they be inaccurate in any way? Why carry a knife? Try to consider how you feel about these reasons: _1 Do you think they are true? _2 Might they be inaccurate in any way? _3 Where have these reasons come from? _#knifefree Lesson

The Reality _1 99% of 10-29 year olds do not carry a knife _2 A person can get up to 4 years in prison for carrying a knife, even if it is never used _3 People who carry a weapon are more likely to be hospitalised with a violence-related injury, and in many cases their own weapon has been used against them _4 Friends who pressure a person to carry a knife are not good friends and will likely not be around to help if that person were to get caught _#knifefree Lesson
