Presentation transcript:

#Finding a common story Linking Images #Finding a common story This presentation starts with participants reflecting on the meaning of individual pictures. It will become clear to them that one picture can have different meanings. After that, groups of pictures are shown to explain that: There are different ways to depict a common theme By showing a combination of pictures it can be easier to explain a certain theme. See the photovoice manual for all the objectives of this presentation.

What else could they depend on? When we look at a photograph, we ‘scan’ the image looking for meaning: symbols, codes, things that we recognise and help us to understand and interpret the photograph. What these codes are depends on our culture, our experiences, our age … What else could they depend on? Other examples: gender, education, the way you were raised.. To give an example with this slide you can explain that a picture of a mobile phone can bring up positive reactions in young people, but maybe fear in older people who do not understand how to use a phone. As a result Every picture tells a different story to every person. Have a look at these individual photographs: what do they tell you? Think about What do you see? What is happening? What does this mean, according to you? How does this picture make you feel? August 2019 Linking Images | #Finding a common story

What do you see? What is happening? Ask the participants: What do you see? What is happening? What does this mean according to you? How does this picture make you feel? Make sure you get different meanings from the group (2 or 3) August 2019 Linking Images | #Finding a common story

Associations Now we are going to look at groups of three photographs. What theme do they have in common, according to you? August 2019 Linking Images | #Finding a common story

Example 1 What is the common concept or theme? This can be nature, life, environment, etc. Let the participants come up with answers. August 2019 Linking Images | #Finding a common story

If you have a hard time thinking of a concept, ask yourself this What do I see? What do I feel, seeing the pictures? And why is that? The aim of the exercise is to: Show that there are multiple ways to present 1 concept or theme Show that when there are multiple pictures together, it is easier to present the concept or theme August 2019 Linking Images | #Finding a common story

So what did you learn from this session? See next slide for answers August 2019 Linking Images | #Finding a common story

To sum up Different people see different things. You can use pictures as symbols to help us understand what you want to tell us. You can use more than one image to explain difficult concepts. Groups of pictures together strengthen the meaning in an individual picture. Groups of pictures together ‘invite’ us to see the story. 2.
