MLA Format The Modern Language Association (MLA) Format is used for identifying research sources. In MLA style you briefly credit sources in your paper (in-text citations) give the complete description of each source in your bibliography (Works Cited Page)

There are two types of sources: Primary sources: firsthand account of an event such as interviews and testimonies. Secondary sources: books, magazines, articles which analyze or comments on topics.

Terms Signal Phrase: lets the reader know the source of the information by including the author and title. In-text citation: is when you provide information about the source in the text of their paper. Quote Signal Phrase In-Text Citation According to John Doe in “Writing Gives Me a Headache,” “Writing and revising essays over and over will make a student a good writer” (97).

Verbs to Use in Signal Phrases adds believes confirms defends elucidates grants juxtaposes proposes admits claims contends demonstrates asserts concedes declares emphasizes follows justifies points out endorses illustrates notes questions agrees acknowledges argues compares debunks disputes explores insists observes accepts comments critiques denies evaluates implies offers recognizes refutes rejects reports

Format of In-text Citations Proper citation According to author in title of source, Open quotation marks Write down the quote word for word (if quoting) End with quotation marks Open parenthesis Include page number Close parenthesis Period

In-text Citation Guidelines When you mention the author and the title of the source in your signal phrase, you only have to put the page number at the end! Example: George Miller suggests in “Metacognition: Reading and Thinking,” that “All students need to implement strategies to improve their comprehension of texts” (77). The second time you use evidence from that source simply include the author’s last name and page number. “All students need to implement strategies to improve their comprehension of texts” (77).

The following in-text citation examples are for books, magazines, newspapers, and encyclopedias.

For example: In the text of your paper: In your Works Cited list: In-text Citation Example For example: In the text of your paper: According to “Electronic Morphine, ” “The first gambling Web site appeared in 1995, and online gambling has since become the most lucrative Internet business” (Will 92). or George Will reported in “Electronic Morphine, ” that “In 2002 Internet gambling surpassed pornography to become the Internet's most lucrative business” (92). In your Works Cited list: Will, George F. "Electronic Morphine." Newsweek Nov. 2002: 92. Print.

Terms Citation - A reference that contains all the information necessary to identify and locate the work. Will, George F. "Electronic Morphine." Newsweek Nov. 2002: 92. Print. Bibliography or Works Cited Page is a list of citations for books, periodical articles or other materials

All titles of any source are CAPITALIZED!!! Underline or Italics Quotation Marks Titles of books, magazines, newspapers, and websites are underlined or put in italics. You put into quotation marks things that appear within those main publications ( e.g. the title of an article inside of a magazine or newspaper)

How to Correctly Cite Internet Sources Are you ready!!! How to Correctly Cite Internet Sources

According to Purdue owl : Include in the text the first item that appears in the Work Cited entry that corresponds to the citation (e.g. author name, article name, website name). You do not need to give paragraph numbers or page numbers. Unless you must list the Web site name in the signal phrase in order to get the reader to the appropriate entry, do not include URLs in-text. Only provide partial URLs such as when the name of the site includes, for example, a domain name, like CNN.com or Forbes.com as opposed to writing out http://www.cnn.com or http://www.forbes.com.

AGAIN: Internet sources: include in the text the first item that appears in the Work Cited entry that corresponds to the citation (e.g. author name, article name, website name, film name).

Citation Format for Internet Sources *With website entries, certain items are not included. Just go on to the next item in the list below. 1. Author’s name, last name first. 2. “Title of the article.” 3. Website Title. 4. Publisher of Website, Day Month Year article was published. Web. 5. Day Month Year article was accessed. 6. <URL>.

The following in-text citation examples are for Internet sources.

Citation: Levy, Steven. "Great Minds, Great Ideas. " Newsweek 27 May Citation: Levy, Steven. "Great Minds, Great Ideas." Newsweek 27 May. 2002: 36. Web. 4 Jan 2013. http://www.msnbc.com/news. In-text citation: “The best ideas are ones that are original, not copied” (Levy). Citation: “Legislative Information on the Internet.” Newsweek 4 Nov. 2008: 36. Web. 4 Jan 2013. http://www.msnbc.com/news. In-text citation: “A president of the US can only serve two consecutive terms” (“Legislative Information on the Internet”). The first entry in the citation is what goes into parentheses! Easy huh…?

: Practice, Practice, Practice Burns it in the Brain!!! Using the sources the library has provided, you must write in- citations for the following types: Encyclopedias Numerous Books Magazine Articles Newspaper Articles Websites Total = 50 in-text Citations for at least 10 different sources! All work is due immediately at the end of class tomorrow after we review!

Review What 3 things should a thesis have? What is the purpose of MLA? What should you include the 2nd time you use a source? What is a bibliography? What are 2 strategies for narrowing down a topic? What 3 things should you consider when choosing a topic?

When Should You use In-text Citations? When quoting any words that are not your own Quoting means to repeat another source word for word, using quotation marks When summarizing facts and ideas from a source Summarizing means to take the main ideas from a large passage of another source and put them in your own words. When paraphrasing a source Paraphrasing means putting an passage from another source into your own words

Why Use Quotes, Summaries, and Paraphrasing??? Quotations, paraphrases, and summaries serve many purposes. You might use them to . . . Provide support for claims or add credibility to your writing Give examples of several points of view on a subject Call attention to a position that you wish to agree or disagree with Highlight a particularly striking phrase, sentence, or passage by quoting the original

Do not place quotation marks around a summary or paraphrase! Model: Acceptable Quotation: In “The Garbage Crisis Is a Myth,” John Tierney exclaims that “ Today’s landfills for municipal trash are filled mostly with innocuous materials like paper, yard waste and construction debris…They contain small amounts of hazardous waste…but studies have found that these poisons stay trapped inside the mass of garbage…so there’s little reason to worry about modern landfills” (53). Acceptable Paraphrase: Garbage found in landfills is usually harmless and although it contains some dangerous substances, these are trapped inside the mass of the garbage in the landfill so citizens do not have to worry about any contamination (Tierney 53). Acceptable Summary: Citizens do not have to worry about the safety of landfills because the harmful wastes that are found in garbage are enclosed inside the buildup of old garbage in the landfill (Tierney 53).

Do not put quotation marks around a paraphrase or summary. Why??? The paraphrase or summary is in YOUR words. Include an in-text citation because the idea ISN’T YOURS! It is the author’s.

the act of presenting someone else’s ideas as your own. Plagiarism the act of presenting someone else’s ideas as your own.

Select four different sources. Assignment Select four different sources. For each source, you must provide a citation and 3 in-text citations which will include a quote, summary, and paraphrase. In all you must have 4 citations and 12 in-text citations.
