Training Module 8 of 10: Social Emotional Learning Best Practices

4 SEL Practices in 186 and Commit to Do: A Restorative Approach Jill

SEL Practice 1: Welcoming Ritual (2-10 Minutes) What is a Welcoming Ritual? An activity at the beginning that intentionally connects everyone to the work ahead (e.g. check-in or community-builder). Why? They create a climate of inclusion, belonging, and connection. They allow students to connect with one another and create a sense of belonging. Everyone’s voice is heard by at least one other person!

Welcoming Ritual Examples What is something you value about yourself? Why? What is something you value about your family? Why? What is the best thing that happened to you this past week? What was the most difficult or challenging thing that happened to you this past week? Tell us your name and the story of why you got it. Talk about a time when you felt like you belonged. Talk about a time when you felt left out. What is your favorite way to spend a Saturday? Great Resource: Circle Forward Book pages 323-327

SEL Practice 4: Optimistic Closure (3-5 Minutes) What is an Optimistic Closure? Thoughtfully finishing with an activity that honors our work and helps us look ahead. Why? Time to celebrate, reflect or motivate towards next steps. Provides intentional closure by having students reflect on their day, and then having them name something that helps them transition away from school on an optimistic note.

Optimistic Closure Questions Think of… ● Something I learned today ● Someone I was able to help ● Something I want to share with an adult ● Something I’m looking forward to doing tomorrow ● Something I enjoyed about the day

SEL Website Adrianne, Gail and Jill

Optimistic Closure: STAND UP/PAIR UP What are my next steps regarding this information? What’s the next conversation I’m going to have about this and with whom? Who do I want to connect with about this topic? I’m eager to learn more about… Offer an appreciation for someone in the room.
