MMU PM training 2019-2020

What makes a good induction programme? In groups consider What an induction programme should aim to achieve The features and activities a purposeful, well-structured induction programme would have MMU PM training 2019-2020

Induction Programme should…. Be well-structured Help Students feel welcomed into the school Help Students to understand the ethos of the school Enable Students to find their way around school Introduce Students to the policies and practices of the school Share with Students the expectations - professionalism Facilitate Student access to resources Allow Students to observe good and outstanding teaching and learning in a wide range of subjects AND understand what they are seeing. Allow Students to meet and observe classes on timetables Enable Students to make a confident GRADUAL start to their teaching after induction. See PM Handbook for the INDUCTION section, this will provide specific details of what is to be included. Expectations Policies & procedures IT & Online access Departments Observation timetable Expectations set – time-keeping, dress, behaviour etc. Professionalism Procedures – staff briefing, photocopying, contacting parents, safeguarding etc. Arrange opportunities to see a range of other departments at work. Arrange opportunities to see examples of good practice in teaching and learning. Support SMs in the use of review docs to create a gradualised timetable. Ensure Students’ are able to work with the department and observe the classes they will have on their timetable. Ensure SMs are aware of Student entitlement and have read their handbooks. MMU PM training 2019-2020

Induction programme activities- detailed in the PM Handbook Timetable for induction phase Welcome meeting and info pack School overview Key staff list – introductions if possible IT access/ID badge/keys etc Safeguarding Professional expectations Policies Etc….. SM meeting School tour Track day(s) pupil(s) – different key stages TA/ EAL/SEND Observations Timetable Learning walk Joint obs with SM/PM/experienced teacher Structured time for engaging with information, researching resources, planning.. SENCO meeting Anything else important to your particular setting MMU PM training 2019-2020

How do you construct an effective Professional Issues programme ? Share your ideas with the people on your table. MMU PM training 2019-2020

Professional Issues Programme Weekly, school based PP session* - entitlement Can be run alongside an NQT programme Specialist input SENCO/TA/SLT/Outside agency/governor/bursar You may lead some, but your main role is to organise Provide a timetable of sessions in advance, remind Students and follow up on absentee Students Sessions should be pertinent to stage of course Ensure there is an ongoing focus on well-being and managing the workload Consider including a slot towards end of placement when Students can ‘request’ particular focus Evaluate sessions In moment Impact on practice Use this to adapt future sessions and ensure relevance. * MMU PM training 2019-2020

How do you as the PM oversee and monitor Student progress? SM Files Monitor quality of target setting, feedback and REGULAR use of progress indicators Observation All Students must be observed formally by their PM at least once during each placement. The observation should be joint (with either SM or UVT) to ensure moderation of outcomes. Formal written feedback and verbal feedback should be given as early as possible and discussed with both Student and SM. Use of agreed lesson observation proforma and Progress Indicator document After the visit the UVT will email a copy of the report of their visit to you. Reviews Milestone assessments No surprises; all involved; communication Formative: opportunity to identify strengths and weaknesses ISP/CFC Procedures MSM-MSG or MSG-MSO procedures at Review 4 MMU PM training 2019-2020

Student Well Being – supporting Students through a demanding and often very stressful course What might cause a Student to struggle on the PGCE programme? How do you know if a Student is struggling? What are the signs? What barriers might prevent a Student from sharing their concerns? How do you overcome these? What strategies can you use to support struggling Students? What advice can you give Students about managing their workload? At what point should you inform the university Personal Tutor? Discuss your ideas in your groups Don’t forget that as a PM you need to ensure your SMs understand how to support Student well-being – consider how you might do this. Ensure you address well-being as part of your Professional Issues programme and make sure the Students are able to share any concerns safely. MMU PM training 2019-2020

On-going Considerations How will you manage your time / workload most effectively? Try to balance time between Students and SM team Read the Handbook and familiarise yourself with it – in particular make yourself aware of timescales and deadlines Use the resources on the Partnership website – podcasts covering lots of procedural information Students making Unsatisfactory Progress – ensure you know the procedures – they need to be followed exactly and it is easier to familiarise yourself with it early on Ensure that you read Partnership Mailings and attend Professional Mentor CPD meetings and Partnership events MMU PM training 2019-2020
