Lesson 32: Use Visual Overlap to Compare Distributions

Essential Question: What does the variability tell you about a distribution?

Words to Know: Distribution - the arrangement of values showing their frequency Mean- average of a set of numbers “M.A.D” - mean absolute deviation – the average of the absolute differences between each data value and the mean *Do we remember what variability means from Lesson 31?

Measures of Center: Mean add up all the numbers and divide by how many numbers there are M.A.D Find the difference of each number from the mean (by subtracting) Find the average of those numbers The higher the M.A.D, the more variability there is in the data set. The lower the M.A.D, the less variability there is in the data set.

1. A high school coach compares the weights of the boys tennis and basketball teams. The data set is in the table below. Use the dot plots of the data sets to visually compare the average weights and variability of the teams.

2. The coach in the previous example wants to support his comparisons of the teams. Do the measures of center and variability support the comparisons he made visually? Calculate the mean. b. Calculate the MAD.

3. Two teams hold a free throw contest 3. Two teams hold a free throw contest. The numbers of points scored by the players on each team are shown in the box plots. Compare the data sets using measures of center and variability.
