Carolina Eventually, King Charles II becomes king and grants Carolina to eight of his friends who helped him become king Grant included all of present-day South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and all land west to the Pacific Ocean Eight friends become known as the 8 Lords Proprietors
Preparations for Journey Lord Cooper recruited about 100 men, women, and children in 1669 to be the first permanent settlers in Carolina Settlers carried “Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina” – form of government Proprietors expected to be followed Colonists received land by Headright Method Religious freedom guaranteed – included to attract settlers
A Hazardous Journey Left England for Barbados - August, 1669 Appointed William Sayle governor Headed for Port Royal area Decided to build settlement on Albemarle Point because protected from attack on several sides Started Charles Town in April 1670
A Difficult First Year Colonists feared attacks from wild animals, Indians, and other European nations Colonists had to become “seasoned” to climate Settlers faced diseases – smallpox, measles, typhus, typhoid, dysentery, malaria, tuberculosis, and scarlet fever Settlement poorly planned
Moving Charles Town Charles Town moved to Oyster Point – strip of land between the Ashley and Cooper Rivers in 1680 Faced Cooper River Laid out in balanced, regular pattern Charles Town capital of Carolina
