TEMPO Instrument Update Dennis Nicks, Program Manager TEMPO Science Team Meeting June 6-7, 2018 dnicks@ball.com

Ball TEMPO Program Status TEMPO Telescope fully integrated, aligned and tested TEMPO Spectrometer fully aligned and tested TEMPO Spectrometer performance was reviewed and acceptable by SAO and LaRC TEMPO Instrument Fully Integrated Vibe Test Complete Ambient performance testing in progress Preparing for TVAC testing Preparing for TEMPO long term storage 6/7/2018

TEMPO Operations: Step / Stare Imaging over Field of Regard Parameter Current Best Estimate Frame Integration Time 118 ms Image Frame Rate 7.92 Hz Image Frame Time 2.65 s Number of Coadds 21 Scan Mirror Step Size 114 µrad Number of Scan Mirror Steps 1283 Coverage Time 59.1 min TEMPO step / stares over GNA in 1283 steps from East to West over 59.1 min Ground processing spatially bins and geo-locates image Images from each scan mirror position are co-added on board Transmit co-added images to ground 6/7/2018

Spectrometer Performance Testing Complete Spectrometer performance testing was completed in July 2017 Overall excellent spectral performance With the exception of some minor/partial non-compliance SAO and NASA LaRC reviewed performance As-built / as-tested spectrometer performance will meet TEMPO level 1 science requirements 6/7/2018

Significant Events Since Last Science Team Meeting TEMPO manufacturing and test activity was suspended from August – November 2017 Awaited resolution of GEMS focus shift anomaly TEMPO underwent minor structural reinforcement (2 fittings) to as risk reduction Integration of spectrometer to telescope completed in November 2017 TEMPO instrument integration completed in May 2018 TEMPO vibe test completed in May 2018 TEMPO post-vibe spatial and spectral testing completed on June 1st Final ambient performance testing in progress 6/7/2018

TEMPO Instrument Fully Integrated Post Tent MLI Install Pre-Internal MLI Install Post-Internal MLI Install 6/7/2018

TEMPO Post-Vibe Functional and Optical testing Test MLI tent installed for optical test Horizontal configuration for spatial and spectral testing 6/7/2018

Post-Vibe Spatial and Spectral Testing Post-vibe spatial and spectral testing is complete Optical performance is consistent with pre-and-post vibe structural test data Pre-and-post vibe dynamic overlays show no structural issues Analysis of test data shows that all spatial and spectral performance is within expected range 6/7/2018

SNR Model Updates Since TRR Significant changes made after TRR: Based on customer comments, corrections to smear noise term have been made Based on customer comments, now include smear signal in the determination of the CTE noise contribution Corrected the dark current collected during an image frame transfer Corrected dark current rate values as a function of wavelength Updated diffuser BTDF values with measured values from GSFC DCL Added smear signal to well filling calculation Added offset term to well filling calculation For SNR requirement verification purposes, the integration time and coadds will be chosen to maximize the SNR for the required TEMPO scene This has no impact on the on-orbit CONOPS shown on previous slides 6/7/2018

TEMPO Near Term Activities Complete ambient radiance testing and light leak testing – This week Re-configure for TVAC test – Early June TVAC Test – Mid-June Mass Properties Test – Late July EMI/EMC – Late July Instrument Testing Complete – Early August TEMPO moved to long-term storage - September 6/7/2018

Summary TEMPO as-built / as-tested performance will meet science requirements TEMPO Instrument fully integrated Successfully completed vibe test and post-vibe spatial and spectral testing Preparing for remaining ambient performance testin Preparing for TVAC and EMI/EMC testing Planning for TEMPO long term storage 6/7/2018
