SPIN BOWLING L.RAJPUT

SPIN BOWLING KEY POINTS Spin Length Rotation (of the body)

KEY POINTS 1 As young players develop at different ages they will grip the ball in a way that comfortably allows them to spin it. If they are achieving good spin then don’t change t hem, however unorthodox their grip may be. 2 Coaches must emphasise the role of wrist particularly for leg spinners, a correctly cocked wrist will facilitate good sideways turn and loop. Watch for pre-cocked- tensed wrist that will stifle natural wrist rotation and spin. 3 Spinners must spin the ball hard if they are to have a good future. Our aim is to develop attacking spinners. 4 Spinning the ball into the air as hard as possible achieves loop, a vital ingredient in spin bowling

TYPES OF SPINNERS 1. THE FINGER SPINNER right arm off spinners left arm spinners  2. THE WRIST SPINNER right arm leg spinners left arm chinaman bowlers

LEG BREAK ACTION a basic action is well suited to leg spin the side on position with delivery arm slightly away from head front leg well braced with weight behind delivery imparting more spin

GRIP hold ball between the top joints of index and third fingers around the seam and well out of the palm the thumb and the second and little fingers rest on the seam with tension between the top joints of the index and third finger

REMEMBER BE BALANCED, WATCH WHERE THE BALL WILL BOUNCE RELEASE release the ball at the top of the bowling action, earlier for more flight and later for quicker delivery at the moment of delivery angle the seam between mid wicket and gully spin is imparted when the wrist pushes the third finger towards the gully and over the ball REMEMBER BE BALANCED, WATCH WHERE THE BALL WILL BOUNCE

THE WRIST SPUN TOP SPINNER VARIATIONS THE WRIST SPUN TOP SPINNER the wrist spun top spinner rotates forward towards the batter turning neither from off or leg bounces higher than normal it is bowled with the basic bowling action by pushing the third spinning finger forward over the top of the ball so that the seam rotates vertically towards the batter THE GOOGLY  the googly is the ball bowled with the leg spinners action but the ball comes back in to the right hander the ball is released from the back of the hand and wrist the back of the wrist points towards the ground at the point of release

OFF SPINNER  ACTION the basic action is suitable for the off spinner in the delivery stride accentuate the movement of your front foot to the leg side by pointing your front toe towards fine leg bowl against your braced front leg and pivot on your front toe

GRIP hold the ball around the seam and in the top joint of the index and the second finger the index finger should be bend and you should exert tension between the top joints of the two fingers griping the ball rest your thumb and little finger lightly on the seam

RELEASE release the ball on the top of the bowling action, early for more flight and late for quicker delivery at the moment of release the seam should be angled between cover and backward square leg impart spin by pushing the index finger and the wrist sharply towards backward square leg and over the ball

TOP SPINNER Grip the ball as the normal off-spinner The moment of release angle the seam vertically towards the batter by cocking the wrist inwards towards the body Spin the ball forward by pushing the first finger over the top of the ball To deliver the ball before the arm reaches the top of the swing

LEFT ARM FINGER SPINNER the left arm finger spinner is the left-handed version of the off spinner (mirror image of the off-spinner)

SPIN CHECKLIST Closely observe body rotation and follow- through Encourage spinners to entice batters forward by throwing the ball in the air Emphasize them to master the stock ball Change of pace to be an effective variation Encourage young spinners to experiment and practise
