This campaign is about encouraging positive behaviour change in drivers of heavy vehicles and people on bicycles. Benefits include: Increased economic, health and emotional wellbeing due to fewer deaths and injuries; More choice in transport mode due to the perception that cycling is safe; Reduced taxpayer costs from deaths and serious injuries; Improved attitudes of people who cycle and of heavy vehicle drivers. A Red Bus driver who attended a Share the Road workshop in the first half od last year told Anne Heins from CCC a story from the day directly after the workshop. They were following someone on a bike along a narrow stretch of road, and while the driver would have previously have tried to overtake the cyclist, instead they hung back to give them space, despite this delaying the bus. Next thing, a car door is flung open, and the person on the bike is knocked off right into the middle of the carriageway. The bus driver says that if they hadn’t hung back, there would not have been sufficient time to brake the bus, and the cyclist may well have been killed. As it was, the person got minor injuries & was in shock, took a while to get up off the road, but sustained no serious or permanent injuries.

What is it?: The Share the Road campaign is an education programme. Its aims: To encourage safe road sharing behaviour between heavy vehicle drivers and those who cycle. How it works: We run workshops where cyclists sit in the driver’s seat of a truck or bus so they understand what the driver can and can’t see. They learn about the way heavy vehicles move and turn and how to safely get past them and predict turning manoeuvres. We enable heavy vehicle drivers to understand what it feels like to be on a bicycle when sharing the road with heavy vehicles. This is done either by taking them for a ride, using full size printed PVC cut outs of a truck cab, car and cyclists or by a virtual reality film experience. These activities are supported by educations resources, post cards, posters, videos, hand outs, etc. We are training driver trainers and cycle skills instructors (Bike Ready) to run their own workshops. What it is achieving. See numbers What behaviours it is targeting: Passing, following and road positioning behaviours that result in near misses, deaths or serious injuries. What is in and out of scope. The Campaign is primarily and behaviour change education campaign. We do not get directly involved in issues that (as drivers and cyclists driving or cycling) we cannot control such as vehicle technology or roading infrastructure. We do have control over our vehicle/bicycle, attitude and behaviour towards other road users, so this is what the campaign focuses on. We are also campaigning for safe road sharing with vulnerable road users in the driver licencing system, and as a recommendation for public contracts involving the use of heavy vehicles such as the London CLOCS (Construction Logistics and Community Safety) scheme where drivers of construction trucks on the East West Tunnel project are required to do workshops like ours.

What is the Campaign not about? The two things we have no control over when out on the road… Roading infrastructure, vehicle technology The behaviour of other road users Because whether or not roads are safe, appropriate for certain types of road users, or the behaviour of others is against the law, unsafe, rude; we have no control over these things. Getting upset about them will only increase our stress levels.
