Get Real – Authentic Christianity Studies In 1 John Pastor John 09 April 2017

“The aging Apostle John seeks to expound the essence of the nature of God in a way that the ordinary man can understand. He directs his message not to those who are theologically trained but to those who are spiritually aware; not to those who have an intellectual feel for great truths but for those who have a big heart for God.” From Truth for Today

“God is light, and darkness, in him, no not any at all “God is light, and darkness, in him, no not any at all.” (Literal translation of 1 John 1:5)

Three dangerous spiritual attitudes and actions (1 John 6-10): Claiming fellowship with God while living in conscious disobedience to Him – 1:6-7

Denying the effects of sin on my fellowship with God and with others.   "I can still sin and have fellowship with God.”

“walk in darkness” is referring to habitual sin “walk” denotes a persistent movement in a particular direction – a lifestyle “walk in darkness” is referring to habitual sin   “walk in the light” means a conscious and willful obedience - even if it is a stumbling obedience “purifies” denotes a continuous action – we are continually being washed clean by the blood of Christ

Your lifestyle will always reflect your relationship with the Lord.

Three dangerous spiritual attitudes and actions (1 John 6-10): Claiming fellowship with God while living in conscious disobedience to Him – 1:6-7 Claiming we are without sin therefore seeing no need to confess sin – 1:8-9

"I am living without sin right now."  Denying the presence of sin is to say we do not have the ability to sin at all.   "I am living without sin right now."

Two natures beat within my breast. The one is foul. The one is blest. The one I love. The one I hate. And the one I feed Will dominate.

“confess” means to say the same thing about sin that God says about it – it is to agree with God against ourselves.   “He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.” Proverbs 28:13

Three dangerous spiritual attitudes and actions (1 John 6-10): Claiming fellowship with God while living in conscious disobedience to Him – 1:6-7 Claiming we are without sin therefore seeing no need to confess sin – 1:8-9 Claiming we do not sin therefore calling our actions anything but sin – 1:10

"I haven't sinned in the past either." Denying the practice of sin is admitting to the possibility of sinning but denying that we have in fact sinned in a particular instance (justifying or rationalizing our sin.)   "I haven't sinned in the past either."

Points to ponder . . . I am not a sinner because I do sinful things: I do sinful things because I am sinner. Sin is inevitable (it’s going to happen) but it is not inexcusable (it doesn’t have to happen). Continual confession is at the heartbeat of the Christian walk.

the breakthrough to the cross.” “In confession occurs the breakthrough to the cross.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Points to ponder . . . I am not a sinner because I do sinful things: I do sinful things because I am sinner. Sin is inevitable (it’s going to happen) but it is not inexcusable (it doesn’t have to happen). Continual confession is at the heartbeat of the Christian walk. God’s character and Christ’s sacrifice is the ground upon which we stand.

When Satan tempts me to despair, And tells me of the guilt within, Upward I look, and see Him there Who made an end to all my sin.   Because the sinless Savior died, My sinful soul is counted free; For God, the just, is satisfied, To look on Him and pardon me.
