UNIT 11: Appearances Lesson A and B

Listen and Draw Listen to the description of the person, and draw what you hear.

Describing People 1. look like What + do/does + subject + look like? used to ask about someone’s physical appearance A: What does he look like? B: Well, he’s tall and thing and wears glasses Who + do/does + subject + look like? used to ask about whom someone resembles A: Who does your niece look like? B: Most people say she looks like her father, but I think she looks like me.

Describing People 2. look alike Do + subject + and + subject + look alike? used to ask if two people are similar in appearance A: Do Heather and Hayley look alike? B: Yes. They’re identical twins.

Describing People 3. Yes/No question with have Do/Does + subject + have + feature A: Does she have curly hair? B: No, she has straight hair. NOTE: the verb have got is another way of saying have (have got = have) I’ve got red hair. = I have red hair. OR She’s got long hair. = She has long hair. American English  question form of have got not common Have you got…? Has he got…?

Describing People 4. How + adjective + BE + subject? A: How tall is she? B: She’s six foot three*. NOTE: Americans do not use the metric system for measurement, so when they talk about height they use feet and inches. (neither do Canadians)

Describing People Be careful! How does he look? = What’s your opinion of his physical / emotional condition? A: How does he look? B: He looks tired/nervous/stressed out.
