Curriculum Information Evening Class 2 Mrs Brearton

Class 2: Taking on new responsibilities Planners Spellings Changing books Homework Water Bottles Choosing a school meal

Assessment Children’s books Spelling checks - weekly spelling tests, end of term test that looks at CEW’s.  Maths assessment at end of unit Science assessment at end of unit Reading – running records and teacher assessment. Personal assessment spreadsheets. These statements lead into the percentages section shared with parents in report cards. Marking – new focus this year on verbal marking. Less written. Symbols to inform the children of their next steps.

Spellings We look at children's independent writing for evidence and we give children individual areas to improve. Weekly spelling test. Children practise the spelling patterns in class Thursday – Wednesday. They are the tested on the Wednesday.  Learning at home is very important in helping the children to remember these words.  Little and often is best. No more than 10 mins and as fun as possible. New words are stuck into their books on a Wednesday after school to be given out on Thursday afternoon. Children must bring their books in, if they forget then the spellings are named and given to the child in their planner. Please stick them into their books at home.

Power Maths See example lesson. Children’s Work books. Same day/next day intervention. Fluency Maths Rocks

Motivating to do homework Class based reward system – team points for completing homework.  Book Worms – completing reading books. Please write in planner every time your child reads with you. Maths Rocks – x3 checks each week. Best score overall is displayed in class. Home reward systems. Ideas??

SATS Preparation The tests take place over a week in June. They are tested in Spelling and Grammar (SPAG), Reading and Maths (2 parts to each one). The children have been taught everything they need to know by Easter, so we focus upon familiarising the children with the test format from Easter onwards. Test examples.

Year 3 Assessment GL Assessment for reading, SPAG and maths. Taken in test conditions. Sent away for external marking. This informs teaching. The majority of our teacher assessment is based upon work in class.

How to help at home Reading regularly with questioning. Practicing their times tables (Y2 – x2, 5, 10/ Y3 – x 3, 4 and 8). Overseeing that they are completing their weekly homework. Overseeing them practicing their spellings. Encouraging independence, i.e. packing their own bag.

Final Thoughts  Please inform class teachers or the office if somebody else is picking up your child at the end of the day. If your child is late then please sign in at the school office. Please don’t let other children in to school if they are coming in late and you are standing by the door (doors to main school near the hall).  Thank you for coming, any questions?
