LIVING THINGS

Characteristics of Living Things All living things are made of cells---- these are the building blocks of life Living things can be described as ORGANISMS All living things have certain characteristics there are 7 characteristics of living things In order for something to be considered living ALL 7 characteristics must be present

NUTRITION– how plants & animals get their food GROWTH RESPIRATION—the release of energy from food RESPPONSE--- respond to changes (stimuli) in their environment REPRODUCTION—formation of new individuals so that the species does not become extinct

6. EXCRETION--- removal of waste products of chemical reactions 7 6. EXCRETION--- removal of waste products of chemical reactions 7. MOVEMENT--- animals move faster than plants

Differences between plants & animals Do not move from place to place Move from place to place Make their own food( photosynthesis) Do not make their own food Contain chlorophyll Do not contain chlorophyll Are green Are non green Have cell walls Do not have cell walls

Animals can be divided into 2 groups VERTEBRATES INVERTEBRATES Have a backbone Examples Fish Birds Mice Reptiles Organisms can be identified and named used a KEY Do not have a backbone Examples Earthworms Insects Spiders
