Rubric for Assignment 1 Classwork Grade 25 20 15 10 Science Fair Topic The Science Fair Topic is detailed and specific enough to be easily developed into a Research Question without further investigation. The Science Fair Topic can be developed into a Research Question with some further clarification. The Science Fair Topic must be revised completely. The Science Fair Topic was not submitted by the deadline. Science Fair Form Form is turned in and complete. Form is turned in and missing student signature. Form is turned in and parent signature. Step #2: Completing background research & summarizing information

Where do you start? You need a plan! Brainstorm key words- look at your research question. Underline the key words in your question. Pick a search engine – try the following: https://www.thesciencedictionary.com/ Skip Wikipedia & go to sites that are verified and you know are accurate. Good examples of websites to use are college and university websites, websites from government organizations or agencies, or science societies.

REQUIRED BACKGROUND INFO If you are using any of the following items in your project, you MUST include the listed information in your background research: Chemicals (anything other than food/edible substances)- SAFETY PRECAUTIONS & WHAT TO DO IF INGESTED/ON SKIN Fire/Heat- SAFETY PRECAUTIONS, INCLUDE WHAT TO DO IF…

SUGGESTED BACKGROUND INFO If you are using any special equipment to gather your data (anything other than a stopwatch, ruler, thermometer, graduated cylinder/measuring cup or balance), include information about how to use the equipment and/or safety considerations. If your data will be qualitative instead of quantitative, research how you can put a scale (numbers) to your observations.

What do you write? When you find information that you need in order to be able to answer your research question, write it down. BUT! DO NOT COPY IT WORD FOR WORD. Read it and think of how you would explain or summarize it for someone that cannot see the page - that is how you should write it down. You MUST include a citation for any information you use that someone else wrote (whether you quote or paraphrase).

How do you cite the source? Book Last name, First name. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Magazine or newspaper Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. If you are using a scholarly journal, like American Mathematical Society Monthly, there is a different format: Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Journal Volume. Issue (Year): pages. Website Name of Site. Date of Posting/Revision. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sometimes found in copyright statements). Date you accessed the site <electronic address (this is www.something.com)>.

In your log… 1st write the citation for the source you are using. PARAPHRASE what you learned from the source WRITE how this information is related to your research question (You are answering the question: How does this research help you answer your research question or make your prediction?) Example: In order to predict how the angle at which the football is thrown affects the distance it travels, knowledge of how the air interacts with the outside of the football is important. By understanding this concept, I was able to learn that reducing friction from air is going to increase the distance the ball travels. I think that the amount of friction on the football is going to increase when the ball is thrown higher in the air because it is flatter on the sides than from end to end. (See diagram)

Requirements: Minimum number of sources: 5 Directions: Take accurate notes of the central ideas in your own words. Do NOT COPY sentences or phrases directly! Do not print information from the internet and paste it into your Research Log. Your notes should be hand-written and approximately 1-2 pages long for each resource. Citations: Record your source information for your bibliography (four sources may be websites; others should be something different, for example an interview with an expert, textbook, books, etc.) directly into your research log. If you use more than 5 sources, just 1 of them cannot be a website.
