Check-in How are we all doing?

Ensure confidentiality (as much as possible) Creating a safe space Ensure confidentiality (as much as possible) Practice using the ‘core’ conditions’ “I want to take a minute or so to talk about confidentiality and how it works. Anything you tell me, stays with me. I want you to know that you are free to tell me what you wish and that I will respect your need for confidentiality. The only time I will disclose what you tell me is if I feel that you may be in danger or that someone you tell me about is in danger. If I do need to discuss what you’ve told me with my manager or supervisor, then I will try always to let you know first, if at all possible. How does that sound?”

What are they? Why offer these conditions? The ‘core’ conditions What are they? Why offer these conditions?

For therapy to occur it is necessary that the following conditions exist (Keith Tudor, 2010): That two persons are in contact. That the first person, the client, is in a state of incongruence, being vulnerable, or anxious. That the second person, the therapist, is congruent in the relationship. That the therapist is experiencing unconditional positive regard toward the client. That the therapist is experiencing an empathic understanding of the client’s internal frame of reference. That the client perceives, at least to a minimal degree, conditions 4 and 5.

Acceptance

Can I accept when the client: says she is ugly when I think she is beautiful is judgemental of others seemingly disregards my attempts to reach out to them challenges my own prejudices or values holds an opinion diametrically opposed to my own is defensive about negative behaviours Etc etc If so, how do I communicate this acceptance? If not, how do I communicate this lack of acceptance?

Skills Practice With particular emphasis on the following: clearly stating the confidentiality agreement and its limits Speakers speaking on an issue that they feel particularly passionate about Listeners focussing on maintaining acceptance while at the same time monitoring their own internal responses

Congruence

Empathy

Assessment briefing The following competencies will be assessed: Establish and maintain an appropriate, safe and supporting relationship – to evidence this we will be filming our skills practices on Saturday, February 4th. You will take the film away to view. Evaluate and monitor self in using a counselling approach – to evidence this you will write a self-evaluation of approximately 1,000 words. You may like to use the headings of self-awareness, skills, knowledge and ethics, comparing your sense of yourself pre-course and now. Present a short, 5-minute summary of your self-evaluation to the group
