Preview of Threads from the Refugee Crisis

What are the two questions to ask before reading a text? What is this about? What do I already know about this topic?

A Look at Important Words REFUGE – What does this mean? What part of speech is it? REFUGEE – Can you think of other words that end in –EE? What does this ending mean? What is a refugee? The 1951 United Nations’ Refugee Convention defines a refugee as a person who, “owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality.” What do you know about refugees? What is the “refugee crisis?”

Using Threads in ESOL 054 Students will read this book over the next 10 weeks on their own and complete the following assignments/assessments: Guide questions (comprehension questions) for each chapter A total of 3 online journals or discussion boards An online quiz after every 3 weeks Group presentations on themes from the novel

Remember that it is important to know something about the author: Who is the author/artist of Threads? How can you find out information about the author? What do we know about her? Where is she in this novel? What does she look like?

Introduction to Graphic Novels Questions to Consider: How is Threads similar to other books you are using this semester (or have used in school)? How is it different? Who has read a graphic novel before? What do you anticipate from your experience reading this? Do you think it will be easier than other types of books? Why or why not? Do you think your reading experience will be different than reading other books? How?
