Feeder schools/parents Share as much information so that staff understand the pupil they are receiving . Staff need to know so they can plan to meet the needs How the individual communicates Special measures to support participation or learning Plan to improve transition for the children with autism

All about me You need to know How I communicate You can help me communicate Fun things I like to do Places I like going Things I don’t like Sensory I’m working on this... Eating and Drinking

It happened to me I failed……..

Involve the right people The young person with autism must be central in any decisions about such changes. It concerns everyone. All teachers and even the children……discuss it. Talk about it.

Structure transition times Structure can be difficult for a child with autism. That is putting what is going to happen in a day in a logical order in their mind. You may find that behavioural difficulties occur more in transition times between activities. Some ways to reduce this are: Use a visual timetable so they can see what will be happening throughout the day Show how long they will need to wait before an activity begins with a sand timer or stickers on a clock Prepare a box or bag of familiar items to touch or smell during transitions

Use visual supports Use of objects, Photos, Icons or Words/ Visual supports can help you to explain what will be happening. Show the child photos of: a new place(a new church) A new teacher Make a book of photos of the new change or put it on a device

Use of objects, Photos, Icons or Words

Be aware of anxiety Look out for signs of anxiety-crying ,not sleeping, crying etc Explain the good things about change Create a social story to explain what they could do if they are anxious
