On a scratch piece of paper… Describe what you think it takes for a country to be a “world power”: Make a list of characteristics OR Brief description

Imperialism Late 1800’s to early 1900’s Unit 4

Becoming a World Power During the late 1800’s, many Americans wanted America to become a world power Reasons: Economic and military competition with the rest of the world A feeling of cultural superiority Method: Imperialism

Imperialism The militaristic, economic and political domination of a strong nation over a weak one Building an empire through the control of colonies or territories Reasons America began to build an empire: More raw materials (natural resources) Overseas military bases – refueling naval ships New places to sell American goods and make money

Examples of American Imperialism Intimidated Japan into increased trading with America Spanish-American War U.S. gained control of territories in the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines, influence over Cuba Panama Canal US helped create the country of Panama so that the canal could be built Roosevelt Corollary US would act as the police and protector of Latin America

Quick Review Why did Americans support the idea of building an empire? True or False: America has never tried to control a smaller, weaker country. Wanted to become a global power (compete with the rest of the world, show cultural superiority)

Food for thought.. Is America still practicing imperialism? Are we still trying to dominate over smaller, weaker countries for militaristic, economic, or political gains?
