Presentation transcript:

You cannot open a book without learning something. Confucius Please sit at one of the tables BUT NOT with your group. On the paper I gave you, at the very top, write your book title, chapters and a brief description of the action in this section. No name…keep it anonymous. Below your book information, pick ONE of the theme statements you want feedback on and write it down NEATLY. Which one is the most promising? I will tell you what to do next. Today’s outcomes: Give and receive feedback on your theme statements Continue to revise your theme statements Understand and begin work on evidence and warrant homework

Homework Come to class with a revised theme statement Find 3-4 pieces of quality evidence that supports the development of your theme statement with proper MLA formatting. Ask yourself, what events in the novel make me believe this theme statement to be true? How do I defend it? Write a warrant/explanation/so what? for each piece of evidence given. Ask yourself, why is this evidence important to my theme? How does it show the theme development? Homework must be typed! Due tomorrow when you come to class! See website for example.

Feedback should… Be specific Be gentle, but helpful Be thoughtful Be clear Help the student fulfill the requirements of the assignment Help the student see or consider something they didn’t before

Procedure Start with your group first, exchange theme statements. Read the theme statement and give feedback on its clarity and effectiveness. Make sure it meets the rules of theme development! Read everyone’s theme statement. When your group receives another group’s statements, every group member should then take a statement to read and give feedback. Write your comments on the paper with the theme statement. WRITE CLEARLY and NEATLY! You will read all the theme statements at your group. I will tell you when to switch. Give the kind of feedback you want to receive. No talking during this process.

Getting the feedback I will collect all the theme statements and share a few with the class. Don’t be afraid if I show your work to the class. I will be gentle! When you get your theme statement back, read through the comments. It is your choice as to what you decide to revise. Get with your group members and compare statements and notes. Start revising and reworking. Tomorrow we will work on thesis construction and evidence gathering. You will have homework over the weekend!
