Plagiarism

What is Plagiarism? Plagiarism has been increasing due to internet. Students could search on the web and copy and paste portions of papers or even get complete papers on line. The American Heritage College Dictionary defines Plagiarism as “the act of to use and pass off as one’s own (ideas or writings of another).”

What is Plagiarism? What types of plagiarism do you know? What are some examples of plagiarism? Turn in someone else’s complete work Copy portions of other works and put them together The work is mostly the same with slight change in words or phrases The work is the previous work used before Sources are not cited Provide inaccurate information regarding the sources No quotation marks for copied text.

Why do Students Plagiarize? It is easy to do Meet deadlines Too much material or the task is too hard Some students feel that their work is not as good as the work they found Peer pressure Do not know how to properly cite sources Accidentally copied work with their notes Do not know the consequences or expectations Good grade

Why is Plagiarism a Problem For Teachers? Students are not learning how to research and write Students are not learning proper ethics Difficult to catch Time Uncertain school rules

How to Prevent Plagiarism Check student work frequently (eg. Turn in thesis, rough drafts, sources) Explain what plagiarism means Let students know the consequences of plagiarism ahead of time Ask for a bibliography page Provide a list of questions the students should address in their work Oral presentation
