Tell your partner what you think connectives are.

We often use these connectives and but because then so Connectives are… We often use these connectives and but because then so words used to join two sentences.

and We use and to join two things that are the same : I like apples and I like pears We use and to carry on the same idea I went to Malacca and I went to Singapore in the holiday.

but We use but to join two sentences that are opposites: I like apples but I don’t like oranges. We use but when something happens to change our plans. I wanted to go swimming but it started to rain.

because We use because to explain what we think. I like apples because they taste good. We use because to explain why something happened. I wanted to go swimming because it was very hot.

so We use so to explain why we did something. I was hungry so I had an apple.

then We use then to say what happens next. I went to the pool then I went swimming.

Which connective and, but, because, then, so? Work with your partner. I went to the sports hall ____ it was time for PE. Today we have swimming _______ we have snack time. We wanted to use the new playground _______ it wasn’t ready. We have to finish our insect project _____ we have to do our English. We were listened well in music last week _____ we all got a merit.

Activities . Red table : Work with ……… to put the right connective in the sentence and punctuate it. Stick your sentence on the coloured paper. Green table : Work with ……. to match the beginning middle and end of the sentences and stick them in your Yellow English Book. Blue table : Work independently to match the beginning middle and end of the sentences and stick them in your yellow English book. Yellow table : work independently to finish off the sentences in your yellow English book (if you finish early use the connective mats to make new sentences using some unusual connectives.
