Math

Math: Everyday Math Program Creative problem solving approach to real-life mathematics through hands on student activities. Math lessons include small and large group instruction, independent practice in student journals, games, and reinforcement through homework. Student materials in the classroom include the daily use of manipulatives and tools such as pattern blocks, rulers, calculators, coins and more. Some of the topics covered include the following: Numeration and Order: Counting, reading and writing numbers, place value, fractions and decimals. Operations: Exploring fact families, adding and subtracting with tens and hundreds, beginning multiplication and division and exchanging money amounts. Data and Chance: Collecting, organizing and interpreting data using tables, charts and graphs. Geometry: Exploring 2 and 3 dimensional shapes, classifying polygons. Measurement: Using tools to measure length and weight.

Science & Social Studies

Social Studies Science: Our Social Studies units include Native Americans, Tenafly, map skills and a focus on communities. The topics will be integrated throughout the curriculum. For example, we will be reading and writing about Native Americans. Field trips will be used to reinforce concepts we have learned. During a yearlong study of Communities, we want to provide students with the tools, resources and experiences that will lead them to understanding that: · the earth is one interrelated, interdependent community · communities are shaped by their location in space and time · change in one community influences other communities · living things in all communities have need for food, water, air, shelter and space human beings have the unique ability to alter their community in a way that monumentally impacts others Science: Our science units include properties of matter, landforms, habitats, and plants. Once again, these units will be integrated throughout the curriculum. Multimedia will be used throughout the Science and Social Studies units.

What We Like About 2nd Grade

Behavior Management Homework I manage the class with positive reinforcement and praise. The classroom rules that were developed by the children are the focal point in our room. In addition, I emphasize six character traits with the children – honesty, respect, responsibility, courage, cooperation and caring. Students are rewarded for their work as a group as well as on an individual basis. Homework Your child will bring home their homework folder each night. On the right side of the folder will be any papers they need to complete for homework, or forms that need to be completed and returned to school. The left side will contain completed work and/or various notices that can all be kept at home. Homework is not meant to cause stress. Assignments are a reinforcement of a skill taught in class.Parents are welcome to help, but should remember that the more work the children do on their own, the more they will benefit. I also realize that at times “hectic” schedules can cause a conflict with getting homework done. Please write me a note on those days when the homework is not done so that I know.

Dismissal If there is going to be a change to the person picking up your child at dismissal please send in a note or email me. I cannot dismiss a student to anyone not listed on your dismissal form unless I have it in writing. If there is a last minute change of plans, please call the school office and have them notify me. Birthdays Children are welcome to bring in goodies on their birthdays. Please bring the treats in the morning so that we can enjoy them at some point during the day. Items that are all the same and in individual servings and do not need to be cut work best. As of now we have 21students in our class, and we do have food allergies. Please also remember to send in napkins, plates or anything necessary for the treat. I do not keep these items in the room.

Book Orders Each year I like to send home many different book order forms. Please do not feel obligated to order from every one. I believe that no one can ever have too many books, and for that reason I like to provide your family with many opportunities to build your home library. Each order collected results in our class earning points, which are redeemed for new books that I add to our classroom library. Questions At any time during the year, please feel free to contact me.
