True Greatness John 20:20-28
True Greatness Matthew 20:20-28
“Sin is lawlessness” (1 John 3:4) “All have sinned” (Romans 3:23) Humility Toward Sin “Sin is lawlessness” (1 John 3:4) “All have sinned” (Romans 3:23) “Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God” (Isaiah 59:2) “These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9) “In whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13-14)
Humility Toward Sin Attitudes Toward Sin Differ None is above sin (1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23; Revelation 2:2; James 4:8-10) Repentance and forgiveness is needed (Acts 8:22) Confession of sin is needed (1 John 1:9) We CAN possess this humility.
Humility Toward Service The World’s Standard Of Greatness Being Served (Matthew 20:25) Prominent Service (2 Kings 5:13) Big Things (position, ability, popularity) A dangerous attitude in the church
Humility Toward Service God’s Ways Are Not Man’s Ways He chooses “little” men to do great things Jesus was mindful of little things (Matt. 18:2; 10:42) Serve, even in little things! Jesus’ example in humble service (John 13:5-15; Philippians 2:5-8; John 13:20)
Humility Toward Self Our attitude about our talents Pride is condemned, even in the world (Daniel 4:30; Luke 18:11-12) The world wants the praise of men (Matthew 6:1-2, 5, 16) He is jealous of other’s abilities (1 Cor. 3:3)
Humility Toward Self We need true self-examination (1 Tim. 1:15; 1 Cor. 3:18) We need to use and grow our talents (Rom. 12:6-8; 1 Pet. 1:5-11) We should be dissatisfied with self (Phil.s 3:13) We should discount our own talents (1 Cor. 3:5-9) We should delight in other’s talents (Phil. 2:3; Rom. 12:15-16)
