Establish Reading Rate. Do Keyword Exercise on The Anglo-Saxon Period. AGENDA: Hero vs. King/Queen Establish Reading Rate. Do Keyword Exercise on The Anglo-Saxon Period. Timeline Handout

Hero vs. King/Queen Would you rather be a hero or a king/queen? Why? What are the differences between the two?

Establish Reading Rate (1) With the handout, read for comprehension for one minute. At the bell, mark in the text where you stopped. Count the number of words that you can read. Mark that number in the margin of your text.

Skim for Keywords 1 Using the same text, skim with your finger—from margin to margin—for 45 seconds. At the bell, turn over your text and write down any keywords or phrases that you remember on the sheet provided.

Prior Knowledge From your keyword list, write down anything you know about the keywords you wrote down. Don’t try to be exact; just try to remember if and when you’ve seen or heard this word before.

Skim for Keywords 2 This time, skim the same text—from margin to margin—for only 30 seconds. At the bell, turn over your text and write down any new keywords that you remember.

Prior Knowledge 2 From your keyword list, write down anything you know about the keywords you wrote down. In addition, if you remember something from the text that explained or defined your keyword, then you should write that down too.

Establish Reading Rate (2) This time, read for one minute… At the bell, mark in the text where you stopped. Count the number of words that you can read. Mark that number in the margin of your text, underneath the previous number.
