The Carbon Cycle Day 4 of Ecology
Date Warm up: Carbon Cycle EQ: (tape handout here) Summary 34 35
Carbon Cycle Study the diagram and on the left side of your notebook write down one way organisms obtain carbon and one way carbon is returned to the atmosphere.
Movie
EQ: How does carbon cycle throughout the earth? Where can you find Carbon? Carbon is part of oceans, air, rocks, soil and all living things. How does Carbon cycle? Carbon moves from the atmosphere to plants. through the process of photosynthesis, carbon dioxide is used by plants to produce carbohydrates = carbon fixation
Carbon moves from plants to animals. Through food chains
Carbon moves from living things to the atmosphere. Each time you exhale, you are releasing carbon dioxide gas (CO2) into the atmosphere = respiration. Carbon moves from plants and animals to the ground through decomposition.
Carbon moves from fossil fuels to the atmosphere when fuels are burned. When humans burn fossil fuels to power factories, power plants, cars and trucks, most of the carbon quickly enters the atmosphere as carbon dioxide gas.
Carbon moves from the atmosphere to the oceans. Earth's carbon cycle is dominated by the ocean, which absorbs 50% of the CO2 released into the atmosphere by human activity. The Carbon cycle in the ocean has two main parts: A physical part due to CO2 dissolving into sea water and forming bicarbonate. A biological part due to phytoplankton converting CO2 into carbohydrates.
Your Assignment The following activity will help you understand the carbon cycle in greater depth Each table group will share 1 di Take turns rolling the di to see where you will move to on your activity sheet Let’s take a look at the instruction class set Everyone starts at “Atmosphere”
