Introduction to Computer Science Procedures

Learning Outcomes By the end of the lesson you will be able to: LO1: Will be able to define what a procedure is. LO2: Will be able to create a simple procedure. Describe what the learning outcomes for the days lesson will be. A lot Nothing at all 5 1

Computers work by following procedures. Do you know what a procedure is? Pupils asked to write their name on a post it not and locate along the scale at the bottom of the white board as to how much they think they know about what a procedure is. Then ask a range of pupils what they know by picking at random peoples names from various points along the scale. A lot Nothing at all 5 1

What is a Procedure? For something to happen you need a set of instructions. The instructions need to be in the correct ordered, to work. Explain to pupils that a procedure is a set of instructions. Eg you could use a recipe or write someone some instructions to get to your house. Have whole class chant: ‘A procedure is a set of instructions’ A lot Nothing at all 5 1

Task: Write the Procedure to get around the move from the green square to the red square. Key terms: Forward Turn Right Turn Left Back The task is explained to pupils. They are to write the procedure for getting the arrow to the red square. Pupils are instructed that they are to turn there red and green card over and leave it visible on the desk. Green if they are managing to do the task and red if struggling. Help sheets will be given to get around the first corner to pupils individually if struggling. A lot Nothing at all 5 1

Pupils are asked to put hand up to share the procedure to get the arrow with blue tac on around the board. A lot Nothing at all 5 1

Plenary After what you have learnt in today’s lesson. You should be able to write a definition of a procedure. On the post it not write your name and a definition of a procedure. Pupils to write a definition of a procedure on a different coloured post it note and stick along the scale. A lot Nothing at all 5 1
