Lesson Objectives Students will be able to contrast AI from robots facilitate the setting up of their AI unit independently from the teacher experiment and select features that differentiate their AI unit from robots
Are toasters robots? Robots
Robots versus AI What did you see AI do in the second video? What did you see the robot do in the video? What did you see AI do in the second video? What did the AI in the car do that the factory robots producing cars could not do?
What Makes Cozmo more than a Robot?
This is Cozmo Treads
This is Cozmo Lift
This is Cozmo Camera and Head

Check for Understanding What do you need to begin working with this AI unit? Do you want to program Cozmo to do what you want?
Now that I have the components set up, what can I do with Cozmo? Object Recognition Speech Generation Facial Recognition
What Can I Do with Cozmo? Landmark-based Navigation Object Manipulation
Quick Review What five AI functions did we see Cozmo demonstrate? Facial Recognition Object Recognition Speech Generation Landmark-based Navigation Object Manipulation
Student Production Let’s explore what Cozmo can do. You will have about 10 minutes to experiment with your AI units. At the beginning of this lesson, you saw a video that demonstrated how AI is different than robots. Using your handout, list functions that you find Cozmo can do. Then, select the top five actions you feel make it special and/or different from robots.
What makes Cozmo unique? What are some of the possibilities you can do with these functions?
1. Take one of each item out Cozmo Robot Xbox One Controller Computer Fire 7 tablet
2. Turn on the Fire 7 Tablet Take out the Fire 7 Tablet. it has a USB cord and a wall charger. Turn on the tablet by pressing the lock screen key on the top right corner of the tablet. Press here
3. Connect Fire 7 & Controller to the laptop Turn on the laptop. Plug the yellow end that’s marked “1” of the USB cord into the laptop where marked yellow “1”. The Fire 7 tablet is now connected with the laptop. Plug the yellow end of the controller into the computer where marked yellow “2”. The controller is now connected with the laptop.
4. Put Cozmo on the charger Take the Cozmo out. Cozmo has a charger and three light cubes. Plug in the charger by connecting the wall plug with the charger (both labeled green). Put Cozmo on it until the LED lights on his head blink.
5. Set up the tablet Make sure everything is connected like this. Tap on “Connect” on the screen. The tablet will now connect to the Cozmo. Sometimes you need to update the Cozmo. The app does it automatically. Once it’s done, the screen will look like this.
6. Run Calypso Needs photo Click on “Calypso” on your desktop to run it. There will be a command window — you don’t have to do anything to it. Calypso will run automatically. This is what your screen would look like if everything is connected correctly. You should be able to see the real-time image captured by Cozmo’s camera in the Camera Viewer in Calypso.
Quick Test… Fill in the two blanks: I want Cozmo to say “Hello Human” when he sees a person, I would program: When SEE _______, _______, “Hello Human.”
Student Production Now that you have identified and mastered various functions of Cozmo, we are going to think big picture and imagine real world uses for these functions. What AI uses can you imagine? Can you imagine the cubes are dog waste and Cozmo picks them up for you? However, AI has much more important uses in the world. I want you to brainstorm problems that AI can help solve.
