Expectations of Advisor/Advisee Advisors Be available, approachable, and respectful of students Encourage and support students as they develop realistic goals and attainable educational plans Have a thorough understanding of UNG’s core curriculum, institutional requirements, and degree requirements Be efficient and accurate when discussing degree requirements with advisees Assist students in developing decision-making skills and encourage them to accept responsibility for their choices Maintain confidentiality Be knowledgeable about campus resources, support services, and opportunities; referring students as needed Advisee Be respectful of their advisor Schedule appointments with their advisor and be on time Come prepared for appointments by becoming familiar with the UNG Undergraduate Bulletin, core curriculum, and program of study for their major Check UNG email regularly and become familiar with Banner Ask questions Familiarize themselves with the academic calendar and be aware of important deadlines, such as advisement and withdrawal Accept responsibility for their decisions

Mandatory Advising Students are required to meet with their assigned professional advisor every semester up to 45 earned credit hours. Discuss academic requirements for your degree Learn UNG policies and procedures Plan future steps in your education Monitor your academic progress Learn about resources to succeed academically and personally How will students know to meet for Mandatory Advising? A hold will be placed on BannerWeb by the Advising office each semester. Regular Advising We encourage all students to meet with their advisors at any time for reasons not related to mandatory advising.

Mandatory Advising What should I do to prepare for mandatory advising appointments? Update and review your Plan of Study prior to each advising appointment Review core and major course requirements Make a list of questions you have about courses, programs of study, and your educational plans Be prepared to discuss course options, address academic problems/concerns, and make decisions about your career/academic paths Familiarize yourself with your program requirements, University resources, and campus procedures What should I bring to a mandatory advising appointment? Things to Know About UNG Computer Science Campus Availability Associate’s of Science in Computer Science only available on the Gainesville Campus Can only take 1000 – 2000 level courses at the Associate’s level Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science only available on the Dahlonega Campus Can take 1000 – 4000 level courses at the Bachelor’s level Internal Transfer Computer Science, A.S. students on Gainesville must internally transfer to Dahlonega to complete B.S. Computer Science. B.S. Computer Science students on Gainesville must internally transfer to Dahlonega to complete 3000 – 4000 level courses. Computer Science courses require minimum grade of a C or higher

Plan of Study and Core Curriculum Plan of Study (POS) Provides the list of requirements for completing a degree at UNG. Outline of what you need to take to graduate from UNG with a Computer Science major Includes Core Curriculum Courses (Areas A – E), Major Specific Courses (Area F & Major Requirements), and Electives Lists Graduation requirements Separate POS sheets for each Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees Core Curriculum Six Areas: A – F Courses cannot be applied to more than one area Declared major may require or recommend courses in specific areas Update your POS every semester and bring it to ALL advising appointments! Involvement Beyond the Classroom: UNG Student Life Elite Competition Opportunities: The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems offers two elite competition opportunities for Computer Science students. Codin’ Nighthawks Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC) Team UNG Programming Team: Competes annually at ACM and CCSC programming competitions in the region. Traditional Programming Team through the Mike Cottrell College of Business. Students may participate in with weekly practices to the Southeastern Qualifying Competition. The Coding Warriors Club Programmers and coders alike gather and emerge in a simulated environment that mimics computer science jobs in the real world
