A Rise in Mass Democracy Objective: The students will be able to evaluate to what extent Americans resisted initiatives for democracy and inclusion by analyzing the responses of American citizens toward minority populations in the United States AP Essential Questions What were the causes of Americans’ resistance to initiatives for democracy and inclusion in the period 1800-1848? How did this resistance represent a change or continuity from previous behavior?

Guided Practice We will analyze a primary source as a group to model the expectations for the groups as they will read and analyze their own source.

Cooperative Activity In your student groups, you will be assigned one primary source to analyze and report out to the class by identifying the message of the author. As you listen to the other groups report out, prepare to ask 1 question of the group that is reporting out. This may be a clarifying question or a follow-up question.

Independent Practice To what extent did Americans resist initiatives for democracy and inclusion? Be sure to include knowledge gained from yesterday.

Conclusion Compare and contrast the treatment of foreigners and immigrants in the first half of the 19th century to immigrants in the early 21st century.
