Figure 1 Available light for a cavity-nesting bird. The light levels (log10 lux) in and around a typical nestbox cavity reveal that average illumination falls below twilight levels inside the nestbox when there are daylight levels outside. In this case, the attenuation on entering the nestbox is greater than 1000-fold. Data from Reynolds et al.
