Teacher Recruitment Marketing Nicole Averiss Marketing Executive, IOP Hi everyone, for those that don’t know me, I’m Nicole Averiss and I’m the Marketing executive at the IOP working in the education department on our teacher recruitment initiatives.

We want to help you recruit Just to remind you that we have lots of information on our website, iop.org/education Marketing basics IOP support And we can help to promote your events… I firstly wanted to remind you about the resources we have available on our website to help you to marketing your opportunities. Visit iop.org/education to view our marketing tips, and you can get in touch with me at teach@iop.org if you want to list your recruitment events or even events you’re visiting on our website.

Brochures still available Email teach@iop.org if you need any We have a number of brochures available to support your recruitment. Our general Love Physics brochure, I think now in its 6th iteration, is updated for this academic year. We have also got a new scholarship brochure available and updated Teach Physics brochures for engineering career changers or undergraduates.

2016/17 – Our focus Teacher Training Scholarships Engineering campaign Campus events School experience programme Salesforce implementation This year our focus is on promoting the £30,000 IOP scholarship. We’re also developing our offering and marketing materials for engineers into teaching. We are continuing our campus events which give us the opportunity to meet prospective teachers face-to-face. We’re now up and running with Salesforce which means we have the ability to manipulate our data in new ways, and we are able to target audiences with more personalisation. This, however, is a work in progress and we hope over the coming years we will be able to track more efficiently prospect to scholar to NQT to experienced teacher to mentor etc. The SEP programme continues to run and the implementation of salesforce has streamlined this. We’re always looking for new schools to match participants with, so please let me know if you have any partner schools who would be happy to take on prospective students for observational experience.

Teacher Training Scholarships 150 awards with £30,000 and IOP support 227 applications (up to round 5) 109 applicants invited to interview (up to round 4) 44 scholarships awarded (up to round 3) So when we go to campus, what do we talk about? We talk about the routes into teaching, the benefits of being a teacher, and the funding that is available – both bursaries and the IOP Teacher Training Scholarship. As I’m sure you are all aware, each scholarship is worth £30,000 funding and scholars also benefit from IOP support, which includes events to help develop additional skills such as starting up a science club, or activities to teach specific topics. This year we’ve received 227 application, which is down by around 12% on last years numbers. IOP scholars receive free IOP membership. As mentioned, we’re working with the IMechE, so that those with mechanical engineering degrees are also awarded membership to the IMechE during their training year.

Scholarship marketing activity Some of the things we’re doing to promote teaching and the scholarship include: ensuring our website is up to date and promoted at regular intervals on the homepage, publishing blogs from our scholars, email marketing to our prospective teacher database, emails to our ITE and school direct contacts, Postal mailing of our marketing materials to ite, careers, head of departments and school direct Using our social media channels

Brochures still available Email teach@iop.org if you need any We now also have a digital iteration of the TEACH Physics brochures with an IMechE logo on them, and a foreword from the IMechE president which I will send to you following the meeting. We will also share with you our ‘It’s not too late to apply’ flyer as we approach the end of the second term.

Recruitment events Attended 24 events so far: 12 Café Physics 1 Insight into teaching for engineers 5 university careers fairs update 6 DfE Train to Teach events update Met 314 prospects at events so far So, in addition to our hard copy brochures, I work with my colleague Ian who visits campuses throughout the academic year for our own Café Physics and Insight into teaching events, as well as University STEM fairs. We also attend the six larges train to teach fairs in London, Manchester and Birmingham. So far this year, we have held 12 Café Physics events, 1 Insight into Teaching event, attended 5 university careers fairs and six DfE train to teach events, meeting 298 prospects. This is pretty equivalent to the number we met in the last academic year where we met 301)

School Experience Programme Over 150 prospective teachers have been matched with a school, and 26 returning teachers. “The experience was fantastic - very helpful, everyone was very welcoming and it gave me plenty of insight into both teaching and my options for teacher training.”

Can you help? Marketing materials please pass on to your candidates New campus events let us know if you think your university would be interested
