Social Media in 15 Minutes Thinking About Channels Thinking About Content Thinking About Style (The Granny Test) 5 Top Tips for Social Success When & How to Contact Marketing & Communications

Thinking About Channels (1) What channels do you have at your disposal? Where’s the best place to share your content?

Thinking About Channels (2) Promoting an event in the future? Facebook Promoting an event happening today? Twitter Sharing pictures at an event? Twitter and Instagram Sharing pictures after an event? Sharing longer-form videos? Facebook Sharing short video clips? Twitter and Instagram (Snapchat?) Recruiting new members? Instagram and Facebook

Thinking About Content (1) The key to social media success – Tailor your message to your platform! Each platform has its own length limits, writing style, trends & needs The most successful social media campaigns exploit all of these

Thinking About Content (2) Visual content is a must! This doesn’t just have to be photos or video! Be creative! If it doesn’t work, don’t worry! I can advise you – book a meeting (after Fresher’s!)

Thinking About Tone (1) Tone and content go hand in hand Everything you post represents your society, Chester Students’ Union and (to an extent) the University of Chester This means you need to be very aware of what you’re posting!

Thinking About Tone (2) Before you post – do the Granny Test! Think: Would Kit’s Granny want to see this?

Thinking About Tone (3) Things to avoid: Swearing (even mild) Dark humour Pictures & videos depicting or endorsing excessive drinking Any content depicting or endorsing smoking or drug use Posting copyrighted content/using non-free stock images Anything that might bring the Union or University into disrepute If you’re unsure – ask 

5 Top Tips for Social Media Success Be Enthusiastic! Energy is infectious – don’t be afraid to geek out. Use emojis! Love or hate them, studies have shown emojis increase engagement by an average of 53%! Size your images appropriately! Each platform uses different aspect ratios and different ideal resolutions – I can provide a cheat sheet on request. Crop your screenshots! If you’re sharing screenshots, crop everything that’s unnecessary out Experiment, experiment, experiment!
