The Cell Theory

Long ago people believed… “Mice came from old grain sacks.”

People thought… “Frogs came from mud.”

“Maggots came from rotting meat.” People thought… “Maggots came from rotting meat.”

WHY??? Because that is what they observed.

Spontaneous Generation This is called… Spontaneous Generation

Spontaneous Generation is NOT TRUE!

People created that theory because they had no better idea of how these organisms really were created.

Now the real story… Scientists started to test the old theories and found them to be incorrect.

Video clip, coming up… Write these names in your notes, one person per line. Van Leewenhoek Hooke Schleiden Schwann Virchow

“The Wacky History of Cell Theory” Video Clip 6:11 “The Wacky History of Cell Theory”

What contributions did the previous people make towards the development of the cell theory? Van Leewenhoek-The first ______ Hooke -Named first ______ Schleiden -All ____ made of cells Schwann -All ____ made of cells Virchow -All ___ come from ___

There are 3 parts to the Cell Theory

All cells come from existing cells. 1st Part All cells come from existing cells.

2nd part Cells are the basic unit of life.

All living organisms are made of cells. 3rd part All living organisms are made of cells.
