Warm Up Review What is a Superfund cleanup site? Superfund sites are polluted locations requiring a long-term response to clean up hazardous material contaminations. Such as abandoned mining, factory operations, disposal sites with asbestos, etc. Community • Commitment • Character • Courage

Environmental Health Launch What do you know about Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and how do they impact our health? On a scale of 1-10, how serious of a problem do you think PCB’s are in Maple Valley? How do you think they get into the environment? Environmental Health Launch What do you know about Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and how do they impact our health? Polychlorinated biphenyls are a group of 209 different chemicals which share a common structure but vary in the number of attached chlorine atoms. Once PCBs enter a person´s (or animal´s) body, they tend to be absorbed into fat tissue and remain there.

Environmental Health Launch What do you know about Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)? On a scale of 1-10, how serious of a problem do you think VOC’s are in Maple Valley? How do you think they get into the environment? Video: What are VOC’s? https://youtu.be/n4beTVw9yKk Answer in your journal

Environmental Health Launch What do you know about Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)? Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are compounds that easily become vapors or gases. VOCs are released from burning fuel such as gasoline, wood, coal, or natural gas. They are also released from many consumer products: Cleaners and disinfectants Moth repellants Air fresheners Building materials and furnishings Copy machines and printers Pesticides

Queen City Farms: Superfund Site in Maple Valley

Environmental Health Launch “Boeing dumped wastes at the two sites from 1957 to 1977. In its verdict, the jury said Boeing did not know about contamination at Queen City Farms until 1968, the last year Boeing dumped industrial wastes there.” What questions does this raise for you?
