Welcome to Your Award-Winning Class! Our short film, “Mad World” won several awards in 2014’s Florida Film Institute Film Festival. Mr. David H. Ernsberger Mr. “E”. davidernsberger@dadeschools.net

What You Will Need For This Class: An SD Card of at least 4 GB A Notebook A Folder to keep handouts in Loose leaf Paper (or rip-able paper—no scraggles) Any combination of these three so long as you have all three A pen or pencil

Class Fee SUPPLIES/FEES Every Digital Video Production Student will need to pay the class fee which is $20.00 Paying your fee and bringing your SD card will be some of your first grades of the year.

C.A.C. The Cinematic Arts Commission The club I sponsor. Our first meeting, for veteran students, will be next Tuesday. Over the next couple weeks we’ll open it up to rookie students. We work very hard on special projects throughout the year. We meet Tuesdays at 11:55 or so in room 201E.

What you will do in this class (an incredibly general overview): Learn how to write, shoot, and edit narrative and news digital films, like a professional, from concept to screen. Learn how to produce a live TV show in our state of the art, live production studio. Learn how to finish projects on time. Learn how to work with others and solve problems through small group work.

The Public Eye This is a very public class. We are always out there, always visible; whether we are shooting, or broadcasting on the tvs, computers, or online to the general public—someone is always seeing us perform. You represent this class, you represent SACH, and you represent ME! If you misrepresent this class, you will be in trouble…

The “Do Nots” – aka YOURS and MINE Do not touch any of the teacher computers; no printing, no checking grades, no nothing! You can BYOD so use them! It is not worth getting in trouble using a teacher's computer. Do not touch anything in any of the teacher desk drawers unless instructed to do so. The table is yours (not the printers). Do not touch any of the ClearTouch remotes or pointers unless instructed to do so. Do not touch the Promethean board with anything except your fingers or a stylus--NO DRY ERASE MARKERS. Do not unwittingly rub against the Promethean board. It is always on and you may delete something accidentally.

The “Do Nots” continued… Do not move desks. Do not move or remove chairs, stools, or any furniture from any rooms unless instructed to do so. Do not sit in any of the rolly chairs—they are for adult visitors. Do not remove the doorbooks from the rooms.

The “Do Nots” continued. Do not use profanity of any sort. Do not disrespect others. Do not do anything stupid (more on that later).

The “Do Nots” continued. Misrepresent this class. What does that mean? Saying you are doing something for my class when you are actually not—especially when you are not even in the class at the time. F for misrepresentation (16 grades) Call or email home When you misrepresent this class, it is dishonest and disrespectful, and it undermines what we are here to do. We need people to believe us and believe IN us in order to accomplish what we need to do (specifically, the teachers). When you misrepresent this class, it diminishes us in the eyes of the people who appreciate what we do for the school and for the community (specifically, the Administration). TRUST

The “Do Nots” concluded (The Orange “F” Policy and the Lanyards) The Administration, Security, and PE are in full support and knowledgeable of these policies. These Lanyards are intended ONLY to tell you apart from the rest of the student population.  However, they will make it easier to enforce the rules that have already been in place, and which I have repeated many times in terms of where you are allowed to go and what you are allowed to do.  Also, there is no grade for having a perfect location – I don’t care what the location is. All I care about is the shots, the editing, and being done on time! *One change from what I have done in the past is that some of these policies will be for individuals and not for the whole group. These are the Orange “F”s. *Also, the location policies are NOT for first block (Morning Announcements). They must be allowed to move about in order to get the news and interviews.  The Orange “F” will appear in the gradebook on the day of the infraction. It will appear as a Red Category, the same as a regular Production Day, with the same weight. Thus, if you have an “A” for the day and you fail to return you lanyard, you will get a “C” for the day because of the Orange “F.”

The “Do Nots” concluded (The Orange “F” Policy and the Lanyards) WHAT IS IN PLACE ALREADY? You must always have your shooting pass (ER sheet). If Security/Administration speaks to you, present the sheet to show who is in your group. If you’re not working, every 22 minutes the group gets a lower grade. If I cannot see/find you, the group will get a lower grade. Upper Hall – ONLY Room 207 to our end stairs Lower Hall – NO You cannot be in any other stairs other than our end stairs. You cannot be in any other room other than our room(s), and you must leave the room as you entered it – put stuff back. You may not be with people from any other classes – don’t go to people, don’t have people come here. You may not go anywhere else except the bathroom (this includes the cafeteria) – Security and Administration knows this – if you’re trying to get snacks and you get caught, either by me or someone else, it’s on you. NOTE: if you want to get a snack or visit a teacher, simply ask me, then return. I often see random students of mine walking down the hall, upstairs and down. If you did not ask to go somewhere, you will get an Orange “F.” No leaving the class early. Be in 207 at the end of class. Not in the Bridge. This is to make sure no one leaves, and to make sure all Lanyards are returned. If any student other than the ER manager is not in 207, “F” FOR LEAVING. If you finish early, keep your equipment and stay in the bridge or classroom. No touching the Morning Announcements equipment.

The “Do Nots” concluded (The Orange “F” Policy and the Lanyards) YOU WILL GET AN ORANGE “F” FOR: Not wearing your lanyard at all times (even in your movies). Being somewhere you are not supposed to be (unless you asked). Breaking the lanyard – do not unlatch the lanyard to put it on – ONLY slip it over your head – unlatching it will eventually break it. Word coming to my attention through Administration or Security that you were not wearing your lanyard. Word coming to my attention that there was ANY confusion about who you were supposed to be with. Word coming to my attention that there was ANY confusion about where you were supposed to be during my class. Losing the lanyard. Not returning the lanyard at the end of class [A.K.A Security (or anyone else) returning your lanyard after class end (but please return it because I already know it’s gone!)]. Letting someone else touch your lanyard (like to return it for you). Having a lanyard you should not have (like someone else’s). Using the lanyard to misrepresent yourself. Having food in the Bridge. Not putting a room back the way you found it. Touching the Morning Announcements equipment. Games on the Bridge Computers. Homework on the Bridge Computers.

The “Do Nots” concluded (The Orange “F” Policy and the Lanyards) WHAT’S NEW: FILMING: Filming in the Sound Stage is off limits. Too many things have been messed with in there. PE: PE – DON’T BE IN IT – if you are in PE you are skipping. PE – ITEMS – if you touch a PE ball or anything else you are skipping. PE – BENCHES – if you sit at a bench (OR just standing around) with anyone other than your group, you are skipping. EQUIPMENT and EQUIPMENT ROOM: ONLY ONE PERSON PER GROUP MAY SIGN OUT EQUIPMENT. Equipment sign out is important! We will take the time from now on. If more than one person signs out, an Orange “F” will be given to the people who shouldn’t be there. Only when sign out is closed and/or when ER hours have passed may other students be allowed into the Bridge. The ER will have specific Open and Close times specific to each Period of the day. See the new Equipment Sign-Out sheets for times. Equipment must be returned BEFORE there are five minutes left in the period. This means the final equipment should be handed to ER Manager BY five minutes left in the period. If not, THE GROUP GETS A “C” FOR THE DAY. Do not drop equipment off at ER desk – that is leaving the equipment unattended. Keep equipment until the ER opens. If you do not sign equipment in THE GROUP GETS A “C” FOR THE DAY. If there is a line and you are last, it’s on you! THE BRIDGE: Please don’t erase each other’s footage from the computers. That’s just unfair. Don’t touch other people’s stuff. No food in the Bridge! There are ants! No more eating in the bridge! You will get an Orange “F” for having food in the Bridge (and maybe if your water is not on the floor, too). No Games or Homework on Bridge Computers.

You may: Say please and thank you; Always ask a question (before something goes wrong); Always make a suggestion; Have fun.

How will we communicate? NOT And I will try to manage these… You will have to join this and/or…

How will we communicate? Email!!! At the start of next class I will ask each of you to write your name, student number, phone number, and a working email that you check into an Excel file. This will make it easy for me to contact you as a class, and make other lists in the future.

ER Manager At some point, when we start production, we are going to need some individuals to manage the Equipment Room. You need to be: Honest, hard working, trustworthy, organized, and patient. And, maybe have a little desire to be in charge of stuff. Put it in the back of your mind—it will come up later.

Digital Video Production Contract You will sign it, take it home, have your parents sign it.
