Maths Learning Support Sheet Year 4: Autumn Maths Learning Support Sheet Autumn Targets: Recognise the place value of each digit in a four-digit number (thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones) Spotting patterns when counting in 50s, 25s ,1000s Placing and estimating numbers on a number line in intervals of 50, 25 , 1000 Understand how to add and subtract using formal method up to 4 digits, applying skills to word problems Formal multiplication up to 3 digits by 1 digit Short division up to 3 digits divided by 1 digit Key Vocabulary: Addend: A number which is added to another Sum/Total: The whole/complete amount achieved by adding numbers together. Minuend: A quantity from which another is to be subtracted. Subtrahend: A quantity to be subtracted from another. Difference: The result of subtracting one number from another. Regrouping: This term refers to when digits add together to make a number greater than 9 in column addition, i.e. 6 + 7 = 13 so 10 of the ones regroup to make 1 ten and 3 ones. Exchanging: This term refers to when, in column subtraction, the subtrahend is greater than the minuend and cannot be subtracted without involving negative numbers i.e. 6 – 7, so a greater value is exchanged into a lower value (previously called ‘borrowing’) Worked Example: 16 + 17 = 33 addend sum/total 46 - 17 = 29 minuend difference subtrahend 16 +17 33 1 46 -17 29 1 3

Key new Learning: addition and subtraction with 4 digits This builds on year 3 learning, however the children are now applying their knowledge to 4 digit numbers. Addition and subtraction: Use the place value columns to add or subtract digits. Addition example: 3565 +3273 6838 1 First we add 5 ones and 3 ones which is 8 ones. 6 tens add 7 tens is 13 tens so we write 3 in the tens column and regroup the one into the hundreds column (underneath). Then we add 5 hundreds, 2 hundreds and the extra 1 hundred, which makes 800. Finally we add 3 thousand and 3 thousand which make 6 thousand. Subtraction example: 671 - 453 218 We can’t take 3 ones from 1 one so we must exchange the 7 tens to become 6 tens and 10 ones. Now we can subtract 3 ones from 11 ones,5 tens from 6 ones and 4 hundreds from 6 hundreds. 6

Multiplication and division: Short multiplication examples: 342 X 4 1368 1 Short division example: 1 3 3 4 5 3 2 Step 1: From 500 we can make 1 group of 4 hundred with 1 (hundred) remaining. Step 2: 13 tens divided into groups of 4 is 3 tens in each group with 1 ten left over. Step 3: 12 ones divided by 4 is 3. There is no remainder. Remainder: If there are any numbers left over, we leave these as reminders in year 4. The left-hand example shows the final formal method that all children are working towards using. The right – hand example shows the expanded method which they use to work up to the formal method. 4 is multiplied by 2 and then by 40 and then by 300. All three products are added together. 342 X 4 8 160 +1200 1368 1 1
